Summer Geoscience Intern
bp operates at the heart of the global energy system, helping countries meet their energy needs and serving millions of customers every day. With world-class assets, technology, trading capability, and partnerships, we deliver energy at scale today while investing with discipline in the energy transition.
As a Summer Geoscience Intern, you will work as either a Geologist or Geophysicist on challenging and rewarding integrated subsurface and applied geoscience projects that support exploration, appraisal, development, production, or technology projects. The internship is intended to provide hands-on, career-specific experience. Our interns work on real projects, contribute to technical deliverables, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and help frame subsurface uncertainty in support of business decisions.
Our positions in the US are based in Houston where Interns work on a wide variety of technical challenges in support of our Gulf of America Production, Western Hemisphere Exploration and Global Subsurface Services Projects.
The key job duties and accountabilities can include:
- Apply geophysical and geological interpretation and integration skills to deliver integrated descriptions and evaluations at regional, basin, play fairway, prospect, and field levels, including the generation of lead inventories and prospects.
- Participate in multidisciplinary evaluations of prospects and fields across exploration, appraisal, development, and production settings by identifying key subsurface uncertainties, risks, and opportunities to support technical recommendations and business decisions.
- Interpret and integrate subsurface data (2D, 3D, and 4D seismic, well logs, cores and surveillance data) over complex reservoirs to define geologic and geophysical interpretation, including conceptual cartoon, reservoir distribution and continuity, key uncertainties and risk, and subsurface description and identify opportunities
- Apply seismic characterization and quantitative interpretation techniques, including seismic wavelet extraction, seismic attribute analysis, inversion, AVO, well ties, and basic rock physics concepts, to evaluate reservoir properties, fluid distribution, and subsurface uncertainty.
- Construct framework structural and strati graphic models, including faults and surfaces, to support bulk rock volume calculations. Incorporate rock and fluid properties such as porosity, net-to-gross, water saturation, and other relevant inputs to complete hydrocarbon in-place volumetric determinations and uncertainty analyses for fields.
- Support well planning and delivery activities through the generation of pre-drill prognoses, including lithology, fluids, faults, and associated depth uncertainty. Identify potential subsurface-related drilling issues using seismic data and offset well information and integrate with a multidisciplinary team to support wellbore design. Gain exposure to real-time field operational support and post-well integration.
- With support from senior geoscientists, develop an understanding of the seismic data lifecycle, from acquisition and processing through interpretation and reservoir characterization.
- Apply appropriate workflows and engage with specialists to ensure fit-for-purpose subsurface imaging and data products.
- Evaluate post-migration pre-stack and post-stack seismic data quality and support seismic data enhancement workflows.
- Work with biostratigraphers to understand the implications of biostratigraphic interpretations, including biozonation, age, depositional environment, and correlations across business-critical strati graphic intervals.
Successful interns may be considered for a full-time role within our One Subsurface programme upon earning their degree. One Subsurface is our early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of subsurface professionals. Early careers will follow a structured development offer to accelerate the acquisition of foundational technical skills, experience and knowledge, and application in the business world. The programme supports transition from university to discipline professional and provides a framework of 'non-technical' skills to support building personal effectiveness skills.
Early careers will build their experience through challenging development assignments, grow a toolkit of transferable skills for the future, and have a dedicated network of support to help them succeed.
Our 12-week summer programme gives you the opportunity to build your technical knowledge, develop key skills and learn more about life will be part of one team throughout your internship, supported by a dedicated line manager and buddy. There will be opportunities to connect with other interns, take part in training, and grow your network across the business.
- Project based roles for 12 weeks
- Typically for students between their penultimate and final year in program
- Assigned a buddy/mentor to help you transition into bp
- Attend events consist of networking, lunch & learn,…
