About bp
bp operates at the heart of the global energy system, helping countries meet their energy needs and serving millions of customers every day. With world-class assets, technology, trading capability and partnerships, we deliver energy at scale today while investing with discipline in the energy transition.
About Capital Development and wells
The Capital Development technical function is part of bp's upstream business and includes both subsurface and wells.
Our wells strategy has four focus areas:
Safety First, People, Business Ownership and Responsible Operator. They should be at the center of everything we do. Together, they drive performance, support growth, build a safe, sustainable future and strengthen the value we create for bp.
About the role
As a first step, nothing prepares you better for a career with us than an internship. Our internship program provides hands-on, career-specific experience working full-time during the summer. You will work on real projects that deliver tangible benefits and measurable results. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to learn about and help to solve some of the most important issues we face.
You will experience genuine teamwork, and work alongside highly qualified and experienced colleagues, while you work on live projects and operations, using the latest equipment and technology.
Taking on the role as a Wells Engineering intern means working with a multidisciplinary team alongside experienced career professionals across wells, subsurface and HSE, among others. You will be introduced to wells engineering and gain exposure to how we design, construct, troubleshoot and optimize wells.
Wells Engineering encompasses the design, construction and maintenance of wells to safely and reliably extract hydrocarbons. It spans three key disciplines:
Drilling Engineering, Completion Engineering and Intervention / Subsea Engineering.
What does a Drilling Engineer do?
Drilling engineers conceptualize, design, plan and oversee well construction, ensuring wells are drilled efficiently, cost-effectively and, above all, safely for people and the environment.
- You design the well: How many hole sections? What path should it take? What materials will withstand the temperatures and pressures? What drilling fluids and cement will provide barriers?
- You troubleshoot in real time during well construction: If the drill hits unexpected obstacles (like a high-pressure sand or tool failures), you support the offshore team by adjusting the plan and mobilizing contingencies.
- You leverage technology to drive efficiency and reliability: From intelligent drilling tools to reducing emissions, you'll help innovate the future of energy.
Completion engineers design the system that converts a drilled wellbore into a safe and efficient production or injection system. They "tune up" the wells to maximize production safely and efficiently.
As a completion engineer, you will:
- Design how wells are prepared for production: selecting the right equipment and techniques to optimize flow.
- Implement smart solutions: from advance hydraulic fracturing to smart well completions to enhance and control the productivity of reservoirs.
- Solve complex challenges: like preventing sand from entering the well or managing extreme pressures.
- Work at the cutting edge: implementing new technologies for enhanced recovery and environmental protection.
Well intervention engineers diagnose issues and perform repairs to get wells back to peak performance when production drops or problems arise.
As a well intervention/subsea engineer you will:
- Troubleshoot underperforming wells: analyzing data to identify why production has declined.
- Design corrective treatments: from injection of chemicals such as acid to dissolve scale to mechanical repairs such as changing valves and other components.
- Oversee complex operations: like running specialist diagnostic tools into the well or changing failed components.
- Managing the integrity of the wells: monitoring critical well conditions, preventing and remediating failures.
- Maximize well life: extending production while maintaining safety and efficiency.
- Manage subsea well interfaces: including subsea wellheads, subsea Christmas trees systems, and subsea interventions systems to enable completion and intervention operations in deepwater fields.
