The Field Supervisor supports the oversight of Houston Public Works Pavement Markings operations, including the installation, maintenance, and replacement of pavement markings, raised pavement markers (RPMs), and other traffic control devices that enhance roadway safety and mobility. The position is responsible for supervising daily field operations, ensuring work is performed in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), City standards, and all applicable safety regulations.
This position assists in the enforcement of Branch and Departmental policies, procedures, and operational standards. The Field Supervisor maintains monthly records and reports of scheduled and completed work activities, monitors productivity, ensures operational documentation is accurate and up to date, and provides recommendations for improving efficiency, quality, and customer service.
Responsibilities include planning, organizing, assigning, and reviewing the work of field personnel and contract maintenance activities to ensure proper implementation, quality control, regulatory compliance, and timely completion of projects. The Field Supervisor conducts field inspections, monitors contractor performance, verifies work quality, and ensures proper utilization of personnel, equipment, materials, and resources.
The position also plays a critical role in emergency response operations by coordinating personnel and equipment during hurricanes, flooding, severe weather, hazardous roadway conditions, traffic incidents, and other emergency events, while supporting rapid restoration of safe roadway operations in accordance with departmental emergency response plans.
WORKING CONDITIONSThis position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture/wetness and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSFour years of progressively responsible work experience in the maintenance field are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSRequires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Preference will be given to individuals with experience in Pavement Marking and Sign Maintenance experience.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such people possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such people are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIREDThe selection process will involve application review and/or interview. The department may administer skills assessment test.

Pay Grade: 17
