Position: Principal Associate Engineer - HSE (Environmental)

Environmental Engineer – Associate Responsibilities

  • Pre-startup/startup:
    Support development/implementation of site environmental programs, procedures, training, tools, and management systems (waste and water). Provide environmental technical input during design through startup to ensure permit/regulatory/corporate requirements are identified and incorporated before GMP operations.
  • Support environmental permitting strategies (waste/water): identify permits, review applications, track commitments, prepare regulatory documentation, and support required calculations/records/reports.
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and HSE to integrate environmental requirements into startup readiness plans, procedures, training, equipment handover, governance, and program implementation.
  • Participate in design/environmental reviews, process hazard reviews, change evaluations, and project impact assessments.
  • Post-startup:
    Provide environmental technical support for API manufacturing to maintain compliance with permits/regulations/corporate standards (including EPA/TCEQ hazardous and non-hazardous waste).
  • Maintain program documents/permits/records/tools/metrics/training and deliverables (reports, renewals, calculations, waste records); support troubleshooting, inspections, coaching, CAPA follow-up, and waste classification/disposal confirmations.
  • Evaluate process changes/capital projects/chemical substances/deviations/events for environmental impacts and reporting obligations; support incident investigations, audits/inspections, agency interactions, environmental release reporting, and continuous improvement.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, chemical, civil engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years environmental/engineering/manufacturing/compliance experience (chemical/pharma manufacturing support preferred).
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis;
    Lilly does not sponsor visas.
Preferred Qualifications /Skills
  • EIT or PE.
  • Knowledge of environmental regs (air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous/non-hazardous waste, spill prevention, refrigerants, DOT hazardous materials).
  • Experience with environmental records/reports/permit applications/renewals/calculations; interfacing with agencies/consultants/contractors.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, data analysis, presentation; cross-functional collaboration; strong organization, troubleshooting, and problem-solving; ability to thrive in a greenfield startup environment.
