The TxDOT Houston District is seeking a highly motivated Transportation Engineer I or II to join the District's Schematic Section. This position plays a critical role in the planning and project development process by leading and supporting the preparation of transportation project schematics for roadway improvement projects throughout the Houston District. The selected candidate will develop roadway schematics using Open Roads Designer (ORD), coordinate project development activities with multidisciplinary teams, support public involvement efforts, and work closely with environmental, design, and project management staff to advance projects from planning through PS&E development.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to some of the largest and most complex transportation projects in Texas while working alongside a collaborative team of engineers, planners, environmental specialists, and project managers.

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.

• Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans
• Coordinates on design schematics, assists with capacity and level of service studies and reviews in-house and consultant traffic control/traffic management/intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plans and projects.
• Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.

Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.

• Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.

Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.

• Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for transportation projects.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Engineer I as well as:

• Acts as a liaison with divisions, MPOs, cities, counties and other governmental entities concerning traffic management and/or traffic safety projects.
• Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
