MissionThe mission of the Texas Department of Banking is to ensure Texas has a safe, sound, and competitive financial services system.
General DescriptionThe entry‑level Assistant Commercial Bank Examiner assists in the on‑site examination of state‑chartered banks. Reviews bank records to determine the bank’s financial condition and compliance with laws and regulations. May also assist in the examination of trust companies. Actively participates in on‑the‑job training and formal training to acquire basic banking knowledge and bank supervisory skills. Participates in training designed to enhance oral and written communication skills, acquire fundamental analytical skills, and develop the ability to function productively.
Uses a personal computer for various operations and assists in the preparation of reports. Successful career progression will include participation in all areas of Departmental activities and supervision.
- Read and study various reference materials including the Texas Finance Code, FDIC manual of examination policies and procedures, departmental memorandums, and the Department of Banking Procedures manual.
- Under the supervision of the Examiner‑In‑Charge (EIC) or designee, assist in reviewing bank records to determine the bank’s financial condition and compliance with laws and regulations.
- May assist in the examination of trust companies.
- Actively participate in on‑the‑job training and formal training to acquire basic banking knowledge and bank supervisory skills.
- Participate in training designed to enhance oral and written communication skills, acquire fundamental analytical skills and develop the ability to function productively.
- Achieve proficiency with Department approved computer applications and programs to accomplish job duties.
- Develop a basic understanding of designated computer functions and operations.
- Submit assigned tasks and administrative paperwork in an accurate, neat, legible, and timely manner.
- Complete assigned work with progressively reduced supervision.
- Attend and successfully complete assigned schools and training seminars.
- Safeguard equipment, sensitive data, and other resources.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with major course work in finance, accounting, economics, business administration or related field with a minimum of six hours in accounting (nine hours preferred), to include basic and/or intermediate accounting courses.
- Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale for all accounting hours.
- Must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
- A graduate degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, or related field may substitute for an undergraduate degree that is not business related (Accounting GPA and hours noted above are still required).
- Copy of official college transcripts must be submitted with the State of Texas Application for Employment.
- Recent college graduate (within the last 3 years).
- Entry level work experience with a financial institution desired.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English with the ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
- Position requires at least 50% overnight travel. Travel may exceed 75% during the initial probationary period due to training.
