Salamander Solutions is seeking an experienced Sr. Operations Accountant to join our growing business. Reporting to the Controller, this role is responsible for providing advanced financial support across operational accounting functions, including cost accounting, project accounting, fixed asset management, inventory, financial close, and analytical reporting. The Sr. Operations Accountant serves as a key business partner to Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Leadership, ensuring the accuracy of operational financial data and supporting decision-making to drive performance and efficiency.
This role owns complex month-end processes, performs variance and trend analyses, supports project accounting activities, and ensures compliance with internal policies and GAAP.
This position requires on-site presence.
EssentialJob Duties And Responsibilities Operations & Cost Accounting
- Maintain and analyze standard costs, bills of materials (BOMs), routings, overhead rates, and operational cost structures.
- Monitor and explain manufacturing and operational variances, including labor, overhead absorption, purchase price variances, and production efficiency.
- Prepare and review COGS analysis, gross margin reporting, and product-level profitability.
- Partner with operational leaders to understand cost drivers, support cost control initiatives, and improve financial visibility.
- Support operational and project accounting, including AFE tracking, project spend analysis, and proper cost classification and capitalization under GAAP.
- Validate project costs, identify risks or deviations, and recommend corrective actions when applicable.
- Manage the fixed asset lifecycle, including asset additions, disposals, transfers, retirements, and depreciation.
- Collaborate with Operations to ensure accurate asset tagging and timely project closeout.
- Lead operational components of the month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and variance analyses.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly internal reports for Finance and Operations leadership.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and audit requirements.
- Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting related to operations, cost of goods sold, and capital investments.
- Oversee inventory accounting for raw materials, work-in-process (WIP), and finished goods.
- Review and reconcile inventory balances, investigate discrepancies, and ensure accurate valuation under GAAP.
- Support cycle count programs, physical inventory processes, and operational inventory KPIs.
- Provide analysis on operational performance, productivity, unit costs, capital spending, and project returns.
- Develop and maintain operational dashboards and KPI reporting.
- Partner with leaders to evaluate new products, processes, investments, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Support ad hoc analysis, strategic initiatives, and cross-functional projects as needed.
- Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and financial accuracy.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA, CMA, or MBA is a plus.
- 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
- Hands‑on experience with ERP systems;
Dynamics 365 experience is a significant plus. - Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
- Strong experience in cost accounting, fixed assets, and operational finance.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Solid understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and operational accounting best practices.
- Ability to communicate financial insights effectively to both finance and non‑finance stakeholders.
