DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the leadership of the City Controller, the Office serves as the City’s chief financial watchdog. Core functions include:

  • Preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
  • Oversight of City financial reporting and compliance
  • Internal audit and performance auditing
  • Treasury and investment management
  • Accounts payable and disbursement operations
  • Financial transparency initiatives and public reporting
  • Executive and community engagement programs

Student Interns contribute meaningfully to these efforts while gaining broad exposure to public sector finance and governance.

The City of Houston City Controller’s Office is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Student Intern I to support the Office’s mission of promoting financial transparency, accountability, and operational excellence across the City.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in municipal finance, auditing, treasury operations, financial reporting, public administration, communications, and executive operations. Student Interns are deployed cross‑functionally and may support multiple functions across the Office.

Under the guidance of the Chief Administrative Officer, Division Director or designee, the Student Intern I will assist the assigned division within the Controller’s Office with completing specific tasks and general office functions.

Student Intern duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with financial analysis, data entry, and reconciliation activities
  • Supporting preparation of financial reports and presentations
  • Conducting research on municipal finance topics, policies, and best practices
  • Assisting with documentation and compliance tracking
  • Supporting treasury operations, including reporting and investment tracking
  • Assisting with special projects across Operations, Audit, Financial Reporting, Treasury, and Executive Divisions
  • Supporting community programs, public events, and stakeholder engagement initiatives
  • Preparing briefing materials, summaries, and internal memoranda
  • Providing administrative and project coordination support

Interns will be assigned projects that align with their academic background and professional interests, while also supporting high-priority departmental initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. May have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area. (Individuals may be high school students.) Must be 16 years of age or older.

PRIORITY CANDIDATES

Preference will be given to applicants who have the following:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA (preferred 3.0 or higher)
  • Major in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Communications, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
KEY

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
  • Use of appropriate written and verbal language and grammar with minimal errors.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Interest in municipal government or public service
  • Experience with data analysis or reporting tools
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data organization)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience on campus or in the community
