Overview

A growing, multi-state organization is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee full-cycle, in-house payroll operations. This role will lead payroll processing, compliance, and reporting while partnering cross-functionally with HR, Accounting, and Operations to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for exempt and non-exempt employees across multiple states
  • Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and garnishments
  • Manage payroll tax filings and ensure timely payment of all federal, state, and local liabilities
  • Reconcile payroll tax accounts and resolve discrepancies as needed
  • Oversee quarterly and annual filings (e.g., 941s, 940s, W-2s, state filings)
  • Ensure compliance with multi-state wage and hour laws and payroll regulations
  • Maintain and enhance payroll internal controls and documentation processes
  • Partner with Accounting to reconcile payroll to the general ledger and support month-end/year-end close
  • Support internal and external audits related to payroll and compliance
  • Oversee payroll systems, including updates, testing, and process improvements
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and scalability within payroll operations
  • Supervise and mentor payroll staff (if applicable)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of employee and payroll data
  • Lead special projects and ad hoc initiatives as needed
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive payroll experience
  • Experience managing full-cycle, in-house payroll required
  • Strong multi-state payroll and tax compliance experience
  • Experience preparing and filing payroll tax returns (federal, state, local)
  • Solid understanding of wage and hour laws and payroll regulations
  • Experience reconciling payroll to general ledger accounts
  • Familiarity with payroll systems and ERP platforms
  • CPP certification preferred
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • High level of discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Work Environment & Expectations
  • Office-based role with extended periods of computer work
  • Occasional travel for meetings or training
  • Potential exposure to operational environments during site visits
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally
