Commercial Portfolio Manager
South State Bank is seeking an experienced Commercial Portfolio Manager to support the commercial loan and deposit portfolio of Relationship Managers specializing in commercial banking and some CRE.
Responsibilities- Analyze financial information to assess the creditworthiness of new loan requests, renewals, and ongoing portfolio activities within the Bank's policies.
- Complete industry research to support existing and new customers.
- Compile commercial loan packages (non BL and BLE) ensuring accuracy and completeness of all required documentation.
- Prepare written credit memos with background information, financial analysis of borrower, guarantors, and transaction, risk assessment, grading, and recommendations.
- Conduct additional credit analysis using advanced tools (e.g., CRE analysis tool) when needed.
- Guide loan requests through the Credit Approval Process, ensuring structures meet client needs and Bank objectives.
- Ensure large commercial loan relationships comply with state and federal regulations and Bank policies.
- Monitor and service large commercial loan portfolios, performing centralized covenant testing, annual servicing reviews, and exception clearing.
- Grade risk of each loan accurately per policy and recommend adjustments as circumstances change.
- Assist Relationship Managers in credit presentations to Credit Administration and other leadership committees.
- Maintain complete documentation for all loans and treasury management approvals.
- Collaborate with Relationship Managers and LOAs to address documentation or compliance deficiencies noted by Loan Operations or other reviews.
- Accompany Relationship Managers on calls with existing or prospective customers as requested.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with internal partners (Loan Operations, Credit Administrators, Branch Personnel, etc.) and external parties (attorneys, appraisers, developers).
- Participate in special projects as directed by Credit Administration Leadership.
- Continuously update skills through professional training and cross‑training opportunities offered by the Bank.
- Minimize past‑due loans by working with Relationship Managers, Credit Administrators, and Loan Assistants.
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients and prospects within the context of risk management.
- Demonstrate commitment to fair lending practices and stay abreast of all applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti‑Money Laundering (AML), Customer Identification Program (CIP), and OFAC regulations.
Education: Four‑year degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or a related field. Graduation from a recognized school of banking is an asset.
Experience: Minimum of 4–6 years in credit analysis, commercial banking, or business banking, including at least 2 years of portfolio management/underwriting for Middle Market clients.
Knowledge: Accounting and lending principles; comprehensive understanding of federal and state lending regulations and Bank policies; excellent oral and written communication skills.
Competencies: Strong interpersonal and listening skills; proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; high attention to detail; organization and multitasking abilities; composure under pressure; cooperative and supportive attitude toward coworkers and customers.
Training Requirements- Completion of South State Bank credit policies, procedures, and underwriting standards.
- Annual regulatory and compliance training.
- Additional training as required.
Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods and effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, and reports.
