Our client is a growing alternative investment platform focused on the energy sector, with a portfolio built around oil and gas investments, joint ventures, and related operating businesses. The organization is known for technical rigor, accuracy, and a hands on, collaborative culture where team members are expected to contribute wherever they can add value rather than stay inside a narrow job description.
This search is being run in partnership with a specialized fund tax and administration team that supports the platform's tax function, so the Tax Manager will work alongside experienced tax professionals across both the fund and the underlying oil and gas structures.
The RoleThis role exists because a growing energy investment platform needs an experienced tax professional who understands both oil and gas taxation and how tax works inside an investment management structure. You will work across investment funds, joint ventures, and portfolio companies, and you will be a key point of contact for directors, investment professionals, portfolio company finance teams, and investors on tax matters.
You will not simply prepare returns. You will need enough technical depth to review, challenge, and manage the work of outsourced tax preparers, and enough communication skill to explain what is happening in the numbers to people who are not tax professionals.
Key Responsibilities- Support the tax management of oil and gas joint ventures, including transaction support, tax return review, and ad hoc tax analysis
- Forecast taxable income and calculate and analyze tax holdbacks on distributions
- Coordinate and oversee outsourced tax providers on partnership tax returns, Schedule K-1 packages, corporate returns, earnings and profits calculations, quarterly estimates, and extensions
- Compile and maintain fund statistical analysis, and maintain and develop internal tax dashboards
- Respond to investor tax questions and support investor tax due diligence and reporting
Required:
- Approximately five or more years of tax experience, ideally with strong current or recent oil and gas exposure (candidates with slightly less overall experience will be considered if their oil and gas technical background is particularly strong)
- Meaningful federal partnership tax experience, including Form 1065, Schedule K-1, and partnership allocations
- Ability to understand and work across complex entity structures
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tax concepts clearly to senior, non tax stakeholders
Preferred:
- Private equity, investment fund, or investment management exposure
- Hands on experience with Intangible Drilling Costs, depletion, depreciation, and recapture calculations
- Experience with ECI, FDAP, or partnership withholding tax
- Big 4 or public accounting background
This is a chance to move from a purely compliance focused seat into a role with real ownership over how tax is managed across an active energy investment platform. You will have direct exposure to investment professionals and senior leadership, visibility into both fund level and portfolio company tax matters, and the opportunity to shape internal tax reporting and dashboards rather than just execute against someone else's process.
The team is lean and collaborative, which means your work will be visible and your input will matter from day one.
