Position: CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER I

Houston Permitting Center / Community Code Enforcement

Reporting Location

1002 Washington Ave.

Workdays & Hours

Monday - Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Subject to change.

Description of Duties / Essential Functions

This individual, under minimal supervision, performs routine field, clerical, and administrative support in the enforcement and implementation of adopted City of Houston ordinances, facilitates abatements, may testify in court proceedings or administrative hearings, and performs special assignments as requested.

Responsibilities (include but not limited to)
  • Enforcement of Chapter 10 of the City of Houston's Code of Ordinances.
  • Perform routine inspections of sites to enforce ordinances concerning high grass and weeds, junk and/or abandoned vehicles, and dangerous buildings.
  • Respond to routine inquiries from the general public, civic groups, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses.
  • Maintain files of records, reports, and documentation of inspections and enforcement activities.
  • Perform other general office activities as required and additional duties as assigned.
Working Condition

There are routine minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, such as occasional exposure to office chemicals and extensive use of video display terminals. Lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and very long periods of walking on rough surfaces are routine components of the job.

Minimum Requirements Educational Requirements

High school diploma or GED certificate required.

Experience Requirements

One year of experience related to code enforcement inspection required.

License Requirements

Code enforcement license issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services required. Valid state‑issued driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy required.

Preferences
  • Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the necessary qualifications for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position, as per Executive Order 1‑6.
General Information Selection/Skills Tests Required

The selection process will involve application review and/or interview. Department may administer skills assessment test.

Safety Impact Position

Yes. Position is subject to random drug testing. If a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

Pay Grade & Salary Information

Pay Grade – 16. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications and the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
