General DescriptionTxDMV’s mission is to serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in Texas with quality motor vehicle related services. This role is a non‑law enforcement investigative position supporting the Enforcement Division, Motor Carrier Section.
Key responsibilities include investigating and resolving motor carrier complaints and inquiries about regulated business activities, researching complex records to determine compliance, and interacting with executives, attorneys, officials, and private entities.
Essential Duties- Review and evaluate consumer complaints to determine violations and recommend actions.
- Conduct field investigations and/or investigations of alleged violations.
- Gather, examine, and analyze complex records.
- Develop lists, contacts, and interview potential witnesses.
- Prepare investigative reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain complaint, investigation, and report files while ensuring confidentiality.
- Research state and federal statutes, regulations, and jurisdictional issues.
- Coordinate with regulated businesses and consumers regarding complaints.
- Answer inquiries and provide guidance to businesses.
- Recommend administrative penalties and assist the correction of violations.
- Use negotiation/mediation skills to resolve complaints when appropriate.
- Provide expert testimony in court cases.
- Attend work regularly and adhere to approved hours.
- Travel up to 50% of the time (including overnight).
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Considerable Knowledge of: Investigative practices and procedures.
Working Knowledge of: Negotiation, mediation, arbitration techniques; auditing and investigative methods; applicable laws, rules, regulations; legal terminology.
Proficient Skill in: Use of personal computers; interpreting and applying laws, rules, and regulations; conducting interviews; gathering facts, analyzing and organizing data; drafting reports; public relations.
Qualifications- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College or technical training in law enforcement or investigative field may satisfy experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Experience: Four (4) years progressively responsible experience in criminal or regulatory enforcement investigative work.
- Official sealed transcripts of all college hours/degrees will be required on or before the first day of employment if selected.
- Valid Class “C” driver’s license required; non‑residents must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days.
- Appointment contingent upon proof of education, experience, eligibility to work in the United States, satisfactory background checks, and selective service registration for males ages 18‑25.

A valid Class “C” driver’s license is required; non‑residents must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days of moving to Texas.
Driver records required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct department business.
