Position: Sheriff Deputy Cadet (Basic Peace Officer BPOC)

Overview

SHERIFF DEPUTY CADET (Basic Peace Officer Course)

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office seeks individuals interested in starting a career in Law Enforcement. Cadets will be full-time employees attending the HCSO Academy, with access to comprehensive benefits and pathways to sworn positions. Upon graduation, cadets are sworn as Probationary Patrol Deputies (PPD) with a minimum two-year commitment to the Patrol Bureau.

Position Details

The Basic Peace Officer Course is open to anyone not licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) as a Peace Officer. Cadets receive competitive benefits including medical and dental plans, retirement benefits, wellness programs, paternity/maternity leave, and an Employee Assistance Program. Employment with HCSO may qualify for the Federal Student Loan Forgiveness program.

Requirements and Eligibility

General

Must meet Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) background requirements
U.S. Citizen (exceptions noted in General Information)
At least 20.5 years of age by the application date
Valid Texas Driver's License
Liability insurance required by graduation date
Correctable vision to 20/20, normal color perception, and normal peripheral vision
Correctable normal audible range in both ears
Pass all phases of the application process

Education and Experience

Minimum of 48 college credit hours with at least a 2.0 GPA from an accredited institution; OR

High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 18 months of military service with Honorable Discharge; OR

High School Diploma or GED with 3 years of steady work history

Notes:

If military experience is only in the Reserves or National Guard, the applicant must have 730 retirement points or six years of service

Application Process

Submit a complete job application documenting education, experience, and veteran status. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Qualified applicants will be contacted to schedule testing. Testing includes a physical agility test and an entry exam (POST) with a minimum score requirement.

Testing procedures are non-discriminatory with respect to gender, age, or physical condition. Testing deadlines are set for each scheduled course. If not tested for two consecutive courses, applicants will be removed from the process.

All tested candidates will be scored; selection is based on the best-qualified candidates.

External candidates undergo a thorough background investigation (may include a polygraph). Internal candidates require no new background investigation; performance, attendance, and pending internal affairs considerations may be reviewed.

HCSO will conduct interviews for the best-qualified candidates to determine fit for the Cadet position.

Candidates may be sent for Physical and Psychological evaluations per TCOLE licensing requirements.

Selected candidates will be contacted before the start of the BPOC to complete onboarding or transfer processes.

Citizenship Exceptions

Per SB 252, you may be eligible for TCOLE licensure if you meet the following: permanent legal residency, honorable discharge with at least two years of active service (DD-214 required), and evidence of application for United States Citizenship.
