Position Title: Consultation & Reference Specialist, RDP

Under moderate supervision of Consultation Management, this position prepares special blood components and performs patient testing. Responsibilities involve frequent contact with internal and external customers, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.

- Evaluate and process special component requests per established guidelines.
- Communicate with external customers regarding patient requests for rare blood, rare donor donations, and/or ARDP.
- Provide technical support and assistance with communicating Rare Donor needs to Collections, Marketing, and Recruitment staff.
- Collaborate with Hospital Services and Business Development staff to optimize hospital utilization of antigen‑typed inventory.
- Support the Commercial Donor Program, including order fulfillment, shipping, ad‑hoc requests, and vendor management.
- Adhere to FDA, CLIA, OSHA, AABB and CAP regulations, as well as cGMP standards and internal procedures and protocols.
- Promote a positive work environment and exhibit team supportive behaviors. Actively help team members achieve optimal department results.
- Assist in the implementation of strategies, marketing and business plans to maintain current clients and increase the client base in all service areas.
- Serve as mentor and technical resource for RDP staff.
- Notify management or other appropriate persons of problems or issues as appropriate.
- Perform antigen screening, other routine serological evaluation in Consultation Laboratory.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Participate in QC and QA improvements within the department.
- Record, place, and fill orders for antigen‑negative rare red blood cells in the BECS (Blood Established Computer Software).
- Monitor Rare Donor antigen‑typed inventory.
- Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies.
- Prepare washed and deglycerolized RBCs.
- Freeze Rare RBCs.
- Perform equipment preventative maintenance.
- Perform reagent preparation as needed.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of statistical reports and billing data.
- Assist in the resolution of billing questions and inquiries for internal and external customers.
- Scan documents to the Imaging Application.
- Receive specimens and orders in the Transfusion Management System.
- Issue and return products in the Transfusion Management System.
- Participate in department new‑hire training program.
- Support validation and implementation of new tests/equipment/software.
- Perform sickle cell screening on donor samples.
- Prepare reconstituted RBCs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned; responsibilities may be modified at management’s discretion.
MLT from an accredited program (ASCP or equivalent) with 4 years recent laboratory experience in a Blood Bank or Immunohematology Reference Laboratory.
