Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of patient care and services to a diverse patient population and their families. The role includes performing EKGs, collecting lab specimens, supporting patient care activities of daily living within defined limits, conducting hourly rounding, and communicating with nursing staff and providers. The EMT/Paramedic demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to carry out delegated tasks, following Houston Methodist experience standards of patient and family‑centered care.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in patient care: ADLs, EKGs, phlebotomy, vital signs, and other procedures under RN or provider direction.
  • Conduct hourly patient rounds and record observations, report changes to nursing staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in electronic health records (Epic) and Microsoft Office.
  • Participate in patient decontamination, ultrasound‑guided IV, CPR, splinting, and other interventions as needed.
  • Contribute to quality and safety initiatives: report near misses, support infection prevention, and follow protocol for patient privacy.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool, etc.).
  • Completion of EMT‑A, EMT‑Paramedic, or licensed Paramedic program; or current enrollment in a program to become an EMT‑Advanced.
  • Six months of pre‑hospital or hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic.
Licenses and Certifications
  • LP – Licensed Paramedic (State Licensure).
  • EMT‑A – Emergency Medical Technician‑Advanced (State Certification).
  • EMT‑P – Emergency Medical Technician‑Paramedic (State Certification).
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI).
Skills and Abilities
  • Perform job duties safely, demonstrated via ongoing assessment.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • Strong communication skills with patients, physicians, and team members.
  • Effective judgment, time management, and multitasking with minimal supervision.
  • Computer proficiency with EHR (Epic) and Microsoft Office.
  • Basic EKG interpretation.
  • Knowledge of EMTALA.

  • Use rapid assessment to identify patient severity and risks, communicate findings promptly.
  • Manage incoming patient information and protect privacy.
  • Report near misses, support initiatives to reduce pressure injuries, falls, and infections.

  • Use resources efficiently, manage supplies and equipment, assist with inventory, and coordinate staffing as needed.
