Molecular Virology & Microbiology (Assistant Professor) Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled scientific professional for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor position in molecular microbiology, infectious disease, and biologic manufacturing within a GMP-regulated environment at TAILOR Labs, Baylor College of Medicine. The role leads GMP phage manufacturing from discovery through release, including SOPs, quality systems, FDA Master Files, and daily laboratory operations, while mentoring staff and ensuring regulatory compliance.
The faculty member will advise clinical, pharmacy, and regulatory teams on trials and compassionate use and build academic and industry partnerships to support sponsored research, grants, and at-cost service models.
A central responsibility of this role is the development, auditing, and continuous refinement of a robust Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) pipeline. This includes development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), notebook and batch record review, environmental monitoring programs, and quality control testing. The faculty member will guide biologic manufacturing activities from phage discovery through characterization, formulation, and release, employing CLIA certified laboratories to execute required United States Pharmacopeia (USP) testing.
The appointee will build and maintain FDA Master Files for registered phage products and support new filings for emerging therapeutic candidates.
The successful candidate will oversee daily laboratory operations, mentor staff and trainees, and ensure high quality experimental design, execution, and documentation. They will also serve as a technical consultant for clinical, pharmacy, and regulatory teams; contributing to the design and implementation of clinical trials and compassionate use cases. Additional responsibilities include oversight of isolate and sample handling, documentation, and reporting for phase trials conducted to GMP standards.
Externally, this role involves active engagement with academic laboratories, biotech partners, and industry leaders to build sponsored research collaborations, negotiate manufacturing contracts, and prepare cost estimates and service quotes. The faculty member will work closely with administrative and legal teams to refine “at cost” service models, support budget planning, and guide legal agreements related research, manufacturing, and compassionate use. They will also contribute to multi-investigator grant proposals that leverage the institution’s phage technology program.
This position is ideally suited for an individual with deep expertise in biologic manufacturing, regulatory development, and translational microbiology who thrives in a dynamic, collaborative, and industry aligned environment.
