Job Description

Responsible for assisting providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. Assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes. Performs general administrative duties in accordance with TJC, CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA and government standards, as well as company policies and procedures. All patient care is under the direction of a physician and within the scope of a medical assistant.

May also be required to schedule patient appointments, ensure medical necessity compliance, and verify eligibility for care.
As a floating‑assignment position throughout an assigned geographic region, travel is required. Incumbent will be eligible for transfer only after completion of one year in the role.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required;
    Graduation from a Medical Assistant program, or
  • Eligible for certification by the American Medical Technologist (AMT), or
  • The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the National Health career Association (NHA), or the National Association for Healthcare Professionals (NAHP) required within 12 months of hire
Licenses / Certifications
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or
  • A Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) required within 12 months of hire; current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required within 30 days of hire
  • Maintains required credentials
Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • Three (3) years of Medical Assistant experience
  • Good communication skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, families, and the public
  • Working knowledge of ICD9/10 and CPT coding and insurance procedures
  • Willingness to float to other clinic practices; employees must be reachable at all times during working hours for coverage/schedule changes
Principal Accountabilities
  • Perform all office procedures with minimal assistance, documenting comprehensive patient information accurately
  • Promote organized care and office workflow; use and maintain office equipment safely
  • Obtain advanced Electronic Medical Record skills and competence
  • Effectively prioritize tasks to promote quality and safe patient care; provide quality patient/family learning experiences based on identified needs
  • Conduct hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; record results in chart; administer medications using the seven rights
  • Participate in quality management initiatives; contribute positively to overall patient satisfaction scores; maintain and evaluate quality control testing
  • Cross‑train to perform patient access tasks, such as taking messages and assisting providers with return phone calls to patients and pharmacies
  • Provide feedback to management with recommendations for changes; seek methods to improve communication with patients and family members
  • Participate in emergency situations, including disasters, fire drills and other emergency situations, and intervene with clinical competence; comply with and promote safety and emergency procedures
  • Exercise care in the operation and use of equipment and reference materials; perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment
  • Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner
  • Ensure safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service
  • Promote individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; support department‐based goals that contribute to the success of the organization; serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff
  • Demonstrate commitment to caring for every member of the community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences; model Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues
  • Other duties as assigned
