Clinical Counselor Job Summary

The Clinical Counselor is responsible for providing mental health assessment and counseling intervention services, as well as continually monitoring and documenting clients’ mental well-being and overall adjustment to the Unaccompanied Minors program. Clinical Counselors work as primary mental health caregivers for the client. The Clinical Counselor functions are performed as part of a multi-disciplinary team and include development and implementation of client therapeutic plans, facilitating transfers, and reunification planning in compliance with Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) and Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) regulations and guidelines.

Essential Functions:

  • Execute client intake, admission, and diagnostic assessments, diligently documenting results per ORR/CFRC standards.
  • Provide mental health assessments, counseling, and intervention services. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans; facilitate both individual and group therapy sessions; and manage preventative mental wellness interventions. Monitor, document, and adjust treatment as per client progression, making external referrals when necessary.
  • Provide counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy to children as appropriate to the position; prepare treatment plans, discharge plans, and follow-up care programs; provide therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as required.
  • Collect background history of the child through interviews, case history, psychological tests, and/or observational techniques; and evaluating the data to identify possible adjustment challenges and determine proper therapeutic approach.
  • Ensures proper referral to OTIP for possible child trafficking.
  • Provide and/or arrange for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for clients in a crisis; including outpatient services or hospitalization as needed.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of documentation as required by state and federal regulations, to include ensuring that all services provided to youth are documented in the client record and required databases in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education/Work Experience

Level :

  • Master's or doctorate degree from an accredited program, university, or college in psychology, social work, counseling, marriage and family counseling, or other behavioral discipline in which clinical experience is a program requirement.
  • LCSW, LPC, LMSW, LPC-A, or equivalent in the respective field, or eligibility for licensure.
  • Additional degree/course work in related fields is desirable
