Job Description Summary / TWC SummaryThe Drug and Alcohol Counselor provide prevention, education,intervention, assessment, counseling, and referral services to Texas Southern University students experiencing substance useconcerns. This position supports the university’s commitment tostudent wellness, academic success, retention, and personal development by promoting healthy decision-making and reducing theimpact of alcohol and drug misuse on the campus community.
The counselor collaborates with campus departments, student organizations, residence life staff, faculty, and community partners to provide comprehensive substance abuse prevention and intervention services while ensuring compliance with federal,state, and university regulations.
Essential Duties Summary- Conduct substance uses assessments, screenings, and evaluations for students referred to through self-referral, faculty, staff,residence life, campus police, or the student conduct process.
- Develop individualized treatment, intervention, and recovery support plans.
- Provide short-term individual counseling focused on substance use, recovery, relapse prevention, and wellness.
- Facilitate educational workshops, prevention programs, and awareness campaigns related to alcohol, tobacco, cannabis,prescription drug misuse, and other substances.
- Conduct group counseling and support groups for students in recovery or seeking behavioral change.
- Collaborate with Residence Life, Student Conduct, Campus Police, Athletics, Student Organizations, and Student Affairs tosupport student wellness initiatives.
- Coordinate referrals to community treatment providers,rehabilitation programs, medical professionals, and mental healthspecialists when necessary.
- Maintain confidential clinical records and documentation in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, ethical standards, and university policies.
- Assist in crisis intervention and behavioral health responseefforts involving substance-related concerns.
- Develop and implement campus-wide prevention initiatives during
National Recovery Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and other healthpromotion campaigns. - Monitor trends in student substance use and recommendstrategies to improve prevention and intervention efforts.
- Participating in university committees focused on student health, wellness, retention, and risk management.
- Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, student leaders, and residence life personnel regarding substance abuseprevention and intervention.

Hiring Range$55,038.89 - $70,174.59
EducationMaster’s degree in counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriageand Family Therapy, Public Health, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Required Licensing/Certification- Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor ( LCDC ) in the State of Texas, or eligibility to obtain licensure within six months ofhire.
- Licensed Professional Counselor ( LPC ), Licensed Clinical Social Worker ( LCSW ), or related clinical credentialpreferred.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Federal, State, Local and County laws.
- Policies, procedures, and practices.
- Requires full/complete knowledge in multiple disciplines andserves as an ultimate subject matter expert in at least onediscipline or function. Demonstrates full command of technical and functional principles, procedures, and subject matter in multipledisciplines to handle any situation and lead or train others.
