The Patient Services Specialist is responsible for supporting Health Services professional staff in the daily operations. Serves as the initial contact for students, faculty, staff and visitors seeking services or information from Health Services. This position provides excellent customer/patient services support including managing the patient management information system, telephone coverage, appointment schedules, and assists with the Student Health Insurance Plan program.
Duties- Primary responsibilities include patient check-in; verifying demographics; collecting copay's/self-pay balances; confirmation appointment calls and answering multi-phone lines.
- Acts as the liaison between the student and the student health insurance provider including telephone interactions, resolves International Student Health Insurance Plan waiver claims, orientation presentations with educational resources.
- Provides clinical assistance with recording vital signs to input in EMR system.
- Receives and confirms inventory and purchases of pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medications, and laboratory and office supplies.
- Creates and maintains office policies and procedures, as well as evaluates facility needs, with the collaboration of the Health Services Director.
- Assists with off-campus/distance education sites (i.e. Pearland campus) for mobile flu-shot clinic, blood pressure screenings, and other educational programs.
- Participates in orientation and new student programs.
- Manages cash handling and processes daily cash deposits and performs related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Medical and ICD-10 health insurance billing practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of budget management.
- Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite of products, People Soft, and Electronic Medical Record system.
- Knowledge of health and medical regulations and practices (HIPAA).
- Ability to pay close attention to detail while maintaining high level of confidentiality.
- Strong office organizational, planning and management skills.
- Ability to work an electric BP Monitor and a battery operated Temperature Probe (report findings).
- Must have clear, precise, and effective oral/written communication skills.
