Houston Methodist seeks a Lead Specimen Collector/Medical Laboratory Assistant to support high-quality patient care in a fast-paced clinical environment. In this role, you will lead and perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate patient identification, labeling, and documentation. You will process and prepare samples for analysis, maintain specimen integrity, and uphold strict infection control and safety standards. The lead role includes mentoring staff, coordinating workflow, and supporting a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous learning in alignment with Houston Methodist's mission-driven values.
Responsibilities
- Lead and perform venipuncture and other specimen collections following strict identification and safety protocols.
- Label, process, and accession specimens accurately in the LIS and prepare for analysis or transport.
- Train, mentor, and support specimen collection and lab support staff to maintain quality and productivity standards.
- Maintain infection control, PPE, and biosafety practices to protect patients and staff.
- Communicate clearly with patients and care teams, providing compassionate service and clear instructions.
- Monitor specimen integrity, storage conditions, and turnaround times, escalating issues as needed.
- Support daily lab operations, including equipment checks, inventory, and workspace organization.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and hospital policies, including documentation and quality control procedures.
