Psychiatric Technician Opportunity

UTHealth Houston's Behavioral Sciences Campus, the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the nation is hiring Psychiatric Technicians! Ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in a patient care environment, must be comfortable working with patient population and a passion for supporting behavioral health patients. We have multiple full-time opportunities available across various shifts.

The John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center, inclusive of the Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC), provides individualized inpatient care across 23 specialized units. Our treatment areas include child and adolescent services, adult and geriatric psychiatry, psychosis care, co-occurring disorders, and competency restoration.

This fast-paced behavioral health environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, therapeutic engagement, and professional boundaries. Psychiatric Technicians work collaboratively with nurses and the interdisciplinary treatment team to provide patient observation, support therapeutic and recreational programming, assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation, and contribute to the overall safety and operation of the unit.

The Psychiatric Technician works as part of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team that typically includes:

• 2 Registered Nurses (RNs) working 12-hour shifts
• 4 Psychiatric Technicians
• Additional staff support for patient 1:1 observations when clinically indicated and staffing resources allow

This collaborative staffing model supports patient safety, therapeutic engagement, treatment participation, communication, and coordinated responses to patient needs and daily unit operations.

This role can be physically and emotionally demanding due to the complexity of the patient population and behaviors that may be encountered. Candidates should be prepared to work in a fast-paced behavioral health environment where teamwork, communication, situational awareness, and patient safety are essential to providing high-quality patient care.

Schedule:

Day

Shift: 7:00 a.m.

- 7:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.

- 7: 30 a.m.

• 12-hour shifts
• Matrix scheduling pattern with alternating weekends: 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, repeating cycle
• Required to work every other weekend
• Scheduled for a minimum of 84 hours within a two-week pay period
• Mandatory Orientation:
  Two-week onboarding process for all new hires
• Hospital-Wide Education Orientation:
  Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.
  
  - 4:30 p.m. (first two weeks)

Please note: Team members may be required to float to other behavioral health units throughout the hospital based on staffing needs and patient census to support patient care and operational requirements.
