Overview
Job Title: Assistant Payroll Manager (Workday Required).
Location: Houston, TX.
Compensation: $90,000 – $95,000 / year (depending on experience).
Benefits: This position may be eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
The following areas describe the key responsibilities of this role:
Payroll Processing & Oversight- Support the accurate and timely processing of multi-state, high-volume payroll
- Review payroll data for completeness, accuracy, and compliance prior to submission
- Assist in managing payroll calendars, deadlines, and processing cycles
- Ensure proper handling of bonuses, commissions, garnishments, and special payments
- Maintain and support payroll processes within Workday (required)
- Troubleshoot payroll system issues and partner with HRIS as needed
- Support Workday payroll audits, updates, and configuration changes
- Generate and analyze payroll reports from Workday
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Support payroll tax filings and reconciliations
- Maintain strong internal controls and audit readiness
- Assist with year-end activities including W-2 processing
- Partner with HR and Finance to resolve payroll-related inquiries
- Assist in mentoring payroll staff and reviewing team output
- Serve as an escalation point for complex payroll issues
- Support process improvements and payroll best practices
- Reconcile payroll accounts and support general ledger tie-outs
- Assist with payroll analytics, metrics, and management reporting
- Monitor and resolve payroll variances or discrepancies
- Required:
Hands-on Workday Payroll experience - 4+ years of payroll experience; leadership or senior payroll experience preferred
- Experience supporting multi-state payroll environments
- Strong knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis)
- High attention to detail and strong problem-solving ability
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
