Transportation Operations - GIS Analyst III or IV - (2601347)

Position Information

The Texas Department of Transportation Houston District is seeking a motivated and experienced GIS Analyst III or IV to join our Transportation Operations Programs Office, working directly with the Director of Transportation Operations. This role supports key safety and maintenance programs focused on reducing fatalities and improving roadway operations across the Houston District. You’ll use GIS, spatial analysis, and data visualization to turn safety priorities into actionable projects.

GIS in the Houston District is not a back‑office function. It directly supports public safety, operational efficiency, and data‑driven decision making. The tools and analysis you develop will help teams understand what is happening on the roadway and deliver better outcomes for the traveling public. Salary and Work Details

Minimum Salary: 60,000.00

Maximum Salary: 98,000.00

Core Responsibilities

Performs advanced geographic information systems (GIS) data development, integration and analysis, produces maps and graphics, and extracts, analyzes and reports data. Provides technical assistance and support of transportation activities or projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

GIS

Analyst III Responsibilities
  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Collects global positioning system (GPS) data and converts GPS data into GIS datasets.
  • Conducts mapping research to ensure accurate use of data and resolve conflicting information.
  • Creates, maintains and updates GIS databases and cartographic products using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software.
  • Develops and coordinates training curriculums and/or trains technical staff.
  • Develops and maintains links between attributes and other databases.
  • Utilizes ArcGIS Online to create and maintain feature services and web mapping applications.
  • Generates reports and produces graphic products.
  • Represents the organization at meetings and other forums.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
GIS Analyst IV Responsibilities
  • Includes all essential duties listed for GIS Analyst III as well as:
  • Plans and proposes projects to management; creates project plans.
  • Oversees or manages the identification, gathering and compilation of required geographic and tabular data from various public and private sources.
  • Oversees or manages the entry and validation of data into the enterprise database management system.
  • Oversees or manages the creation and production of cartographic map products, web mapping applications, and ArcGIS Online maps…
