Position Summary

Responsible for the day-to-day activities related to system stability, reliability, and security.

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems, and computer system software.
  • Installs, maintains, configures, and upgrades UNIX operating systems to improve the reliability, safety, and performance of the system.
  • Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted.
  • Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.
  • Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing.
  • Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.
  • Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.
  • Implements security and the disaster recovery according to established standards policy and guidelines.
  • Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.
  • Implements system software projects.
  • Presents technical briefings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree required. Training in information technology required. May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

Minimum Experience

1 year in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments required. Experience with the network and server hardware, software, and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure preferred

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position.

Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Residency Requirement

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
