Commercial Lines Marketing And Underwriting Senior Specialist (Sbds)

The Commercial Lines Marketing and Underwriting Senior Specialist (SBDS) develops, manages, and strategically grows independent agency relationships, with a primary focus on agency marketing, new business production, and retention of existing business within an assigned region or territory. Through regular agency engagement and field marketing activities, this role identifies business opportunities, strengthens agency partnerships, and drives profitable growth. The incumbent also applies underwriting expertise to review, analyze, approve, or decline complex business within their letter of authority.

Serves as a liaison with company personnel regarding business opportunities and problem resolution and assists in developing and executing the territory's or region's overall agency plan.

This position involves field-based work requiring travel within the assigned market/territory. Residency within or in close proximity to the designated market is required to support job responsibilities.

Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Calculate, prepare, and develop premium quotations in accordance with corporate underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
  • Determine underwriting eligibility, analyze account exposures, and accept or reject new business, renewals, endorsements, and policy changes within authority limits.
  • Evaluate agency production, loss experience, and profitability to identify trends and implement corrective action plans as needed.
  • Manage an assigned territory or region, with accountability for new business development, retention, profitability, and growth objectives.
  • Develop, maintain, and strengthen agency relationships through regular consultation, service, and business planning.
  • Address agent and policyholder inquiries and coordinate solutions to customer, operational, and service-related issues.
  • Promote workers' compensation insurance products and services while identifying opportunities to expand business within the territory.
  • Gather and analyze market, competitive, and product intelligence to support territory and business strategies.
  • Interpret territory performance reports and prepare periodic reports, recommendations, and business analyses as requested.
  • Collaborate with Claims, Loss Control, Premium Audit, and other internal departments to develop and execute service strategies for agents and policyholders.
  • Research and coordinate responses to agents, policyholders, regulatory entities, and other business partners.
  • Participate in agency appointments, onboarding, training, and annual agency audit activities.
  • Negotiate and manage consultative agreements and service plans with designated agency partners.
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade associations, agency meetings, and promotional activities.
  • Provide input into agency advisory councils, rate reviews, regional planning initiatives, and other strategic projects.
  • Assist in establishing regional goals and contribute to territory and organizational business planning.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert within the region or territory.
  • Lead training and knowledge-sharing sessions for team members, agents, policyholders, and business partners.
  • Mentor and develop Business Development Consultants and other team members through coaching, guidance, and support.
  • Demonstrate leadership by serving as a backup to the Regional Manager and supporting special committees, task forces, and organizational initiatives.

Employment Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, insurance or related field. MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in an insurance organization with demonstrated technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: underwriting, marketing, loss prevention, auditing or similar knowledge that provide the necessary skills and abilities.
  • Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy.
  • Monoline Workers' compensation or Multiline P&C insurance experience required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities (SKA)

Required:

  • Ability to exercise advanced judgment skills in evaluating and determining the proper pricing for prospective policyholders using corporate underwriting guidelines by accepting or rejecting risks for the purposes of issuing workers' compensation insurance coverage.
  • Ability to manage agency relationships and demonstrated ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate jurisdictional workers compensation laws.
  • Ability to calculate expected pricing, dividends, and premium quotations for agents and policyholders.
  • Ability to analyze territory or region in order to identify problems and take the appropriate corrective action.
