A leading Houston-based energy law practice is seeking an experienced Oil & Gas Attorney with strong title opinion and transactional experience. The firm represents a premier portfolio of clients in the upstream and midstream sectors — including operators, private equity firms, and energy investors — and is recognized for its deep technical expertise and high-quality legal counsel in complex oil and gas matters.

Position

Summary

The attorney will be responsible for delivering high-quality title opinion work, advising clients on ownership and mineral rights issues, and supporting transactional projects across multiple jurisdictions. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with sophisticated clients and industry professionals in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed title examinations and prepare comprehensive title opinions (drilling, division order, acquisition, and financing).
  • Review and analyze conveyance instruments, deeds, leases, assignments, easements, and curative documents.
  • Identify and resolve title defects, ownership disputes, and curative issues.
  • Support due diligence for acquisitions, divestitures, and financing transactions.
  • Advise clients on regulatory and operational matters related to mineral, leasehold, and surface ownership.
  • Draft and negotiate energy-related contracts and agreements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and landmen to ensure accuracy and timely delivery of work product.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Texas title law and other producing states, as applicable.
  • Mentor junior attorneys or legal staff on title opinion standards and methodology.
Required Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) and active license in good standing with the Texas Bar.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in oil & gas law, with substantial focus on title opinion work.
  • Proven ability to review complex title chains and prepare marketable title opinions.
  • Strong understanding of mineral, surface, and leasehold interests, including curative procedures.
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple client matters and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • High attention to detail, professional judgment, and commitment to quality work.
Preferred Attributes
  • Experience with major operators, private equity firms, or energy investors.
  • Knowledge of multi-state title standards or cross-jurisdictional title work.
  • Familiarity with energy transactions such as A&D, joint operating agreements, or financing matters.
  • Portable client relationships or business development capabilities are a plus.
  • Interest or background in emerging energy sectors (renewables, carbon capture, hydrogen, etc.) is advantageous.
