Program Coordinator – Legal Advice Clinics (Legal Line)

Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) mobilizes volunteer attorneys to provide free civil legal services to low‑income individuals and families. This includes issues such as family law, estate planning, landlord/tenant disputes, tax, consumer issues, bankruptcy matters, guardianship, and criminal expunctions. HVL also provides a variety of support to self‑represented litigants who are navigating the legal system without legal representation. Position

Summary

HVL seeks a full‑time Program Coordinator to support and coordinate its weekly Legal Advice Clinics (Legal Line). This position plays a vital role in ensuring high‑quality service delivery by managing clinic logistics, supporting volunteer attorneys, communicating with applicants, and maintaining accurate case data. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, organized, adaptable, and motivated by a passion for social justice.

The Program Coordinator reports to the Legal Services Director and works closely with the Pro Bono Director, staff attorneys, volunteer attorneys, and program leadership.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and schedule attorney assignments for weekly Legal Advice Clinics, ensuring adequate volunteer coverage.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteer and staff attorneys regarding clinic logistics, confirmations, and consultation status.
  • Provide volunteer attorneys with access to legal resources and basic technical support before and during clinics.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with volunteer attorneys to recruit for future clinics.
  • Communicate with applicants regarding appointments, next steps, and case status.
  • Accurately enter, update, and maintain clinic and case data in Legal Server
    , HVL’s case management system.
  • Complete case closing functions in Legal Server and generate and send closing letters to applicants.
  • Maintain and update volunteer database to track volunteer participation, preferred areas of legal assistance, and subject‑matter expertise.
  • Coordinate orientation and training materials for new Legal Advice Clinic volunteer attorneys.
  • Provide administrative support to other HVL programs and initiatives as needed.
  • Manage a high volume of administrative tasks in a fast‑paced, client‑centered environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Proficiency across major software platforms, including Microsoft Office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to access to justice and client‑centered legal services.
  • High attention to detail, particularly in data entry and documentation.
  • Self‑motivated with the ability to take initiative and follow through independently.
  • Flexible, collaborative team player with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to problem‑solve creatively and work effectively under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Spanish (spoken and written).
  • College degree or Paralegal Certificate.
  • Experience in a legal aid, nonprofit, or volunteer‑driven organization.
  • Salary: starting at $37,000/year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
