Job Description

Lead Custodian position with responsibilities for maintaining safety, cleanliness and efficiency of building operations and grounds. This role includes opening and closing an assigned building during normal hours, special functions and emergencies, and performing custodial work and minor maintenance as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Execute necessary assignment changes to cover for absent employee(s) as the need arises.
  • Communicate with the foreman about custodial supply needs, equipment repairs, building concerns and custodial concerns.
  • Perform general cleaning such as stripping floors, buffing, sweeping, dusting, mopping and scrubbing; clean windows, walls, drinking fountains, whiteboards and restrooms.
  • Pick up trash from grounds; sweep/blow entrance walkways and sidewalks. Replace light bulbs and tubes. Set up and break down cafeteria tables.
  • Move and rearrange furniture; clean halls and replenish supplies as scheduled/needed. Assist with waste prevention and efficient use of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Cleaning and Safety
  • Dispense and replenish custodial supplies.
  • Ensure the building is locked and secured.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures, including lifting and climbing, to perform job duties.
  • Report unsafe conditions and correct as possible; notify supervisor if unable to correct.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
Other
  • Perform regular custodial duties and keep grounds clean of trash and debris.
  • When requested by a custodial supervisor or foreman, work hours, assignment and location may change based on campus and district needs.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Monitor and direct the work of custodians as required and communicate effectively with foreman and supervisor.

Qualifications/Skills Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial experience required.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of custodial experience preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak basic English and Spanish.
  • Ability to receive, comprehend and carry out both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to work effectively with school administrators, students, staff, contractors, vendors and community.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Physical ability to perform custodial work (e.g., mopping, buffing, lifting up to 50 lbs., moving furniture).
  • Ability to work on an eight (8) foot ladder.
  • Ability to operate custodial and related equipment.
  • History of strong work ethic, integrity and respect.
  • Ability to lead a custodial team, work alone and unsupervised.
Working Conditions Mental Demands
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions. This position involves regular in-person interaction with the public.
Physical Demands
  • Continual standing, walking, pushing and pulling.
  • Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing (ladder); moderate lifting and carrying.
  • Occasional overtime and emergency coverage may be required.
Environmental Factors
  • Work indoors and outdoors; assess slippery or uneven surfaces and ladders; exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust and chemicals.
