The General Maintenance Engineer will be responsible primarily for general maintenance and repairs in guest rooms, meeting spaces, and front‑of‑the‑house areas, as well as back‑of‑the‑house areas including kitchen, laundry, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. A Shift Engineer will also perform preventive maintenance on major equipment and systems, using a Windows‑based computer system. Ability to read blueprints and schematics is preferred, along with basic troubleshooting skills.
Good communication skills are necessary.
- Conduct a tour during the early part of the shift, checking lights in lobby areas and room corridors.
- Always keep the grounds of the hotel clean.
- Check your designated area for work orders generated in the hotel’s Maintenance Program.
- At specified times, check mechanical readings, water pressure, and temperature readings. Report out to the Director of Engineering or the Engineering Supervisor when readings are not correct.
- Complete daily check‑list sheets.
- Handle all radio responses and guest requests.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance of HVAC units, kitchen, and laundry equipment as required by established maintenance schedules.
- Perform pool reading and pool basic maintenance.
- Leave notes and documentation for the DOE and supervisor of unsolved problems or areas that need follow‑up the next day.
- Through work orders, job tickets, and the daily log, document all work performed on your shift.
- Complete all work requests assigned to you on a timely basis. Fill in WOs with work done on the job.
- Assist in loss prevention when needed and directed by the DOE.
- Assist loss prevention in fire alarms and emergencies.
- Actively pursue training to update mechanical and electrical skills. Aspire to become a Class 1 Engineer in the future.
- Ensure that the lighting in the hotel is on or functional.
- Conduct basic HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical preventive maintenance on hotel equipment.
- Report out to DOE or the Engineering Supervisor when parts are needed to complete work in the hotel.
- Look for ways to save on energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
- Always maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and be in proper uniform.
- Ensure teamwork in the department and with other departments. Work collaboratively with others in a positive manner. Follow up on all reasonable requests for other Department Managers.
- Respond to any guest room request within 15 minutes.
- Always keep the department clean and organized. Put away anything you take out. Department tools should be organized and accounted for at the end of the day.
- Ensure all mechanical rooms are clean and organized.
- Have knowledge of and participate in the total quality management process.
- Have knowledge of the department’s job safety analysis and adhere to the JSAs.
- Have knowledge and adhere to all hotel safety policies.
- Adhere to the department’s mission statement and core values.
- Attend the daily department meeting and participate in the training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent required. Some college or advanced vocational training preferred.
- 1–2 years’ experience in general building maintenance and/or construction, or equivalent combination of education.
- Specialized expertise in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry fields is preferred.
- Hotel experience preferred.
- Carrying, lifting, pushing, and/or pulling items weighing up to 50–100 pounds.
- Frequent standing up and moving about the facility.
- Frequent handling of objects and equipment required to maintain the building.
- Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and crawling.
- Occasionally, climbing stairs.
