Position Summary

The Operations Manager is a Manager level role within Valmont’s Coatings Division. The incumbent must be a highly driven, hands-on, independent self-starter with a strong OEM manufacturing or industrial coatings background to lead a galvanizing operation. Candidates with experience in Below Grade Coating (industrial paint) and blasting are highly preferred. This role manages a two- or three-shift operation, including safety, production, quality, shipping and receiving, scheduling, maintenance, chemical reclamation, lean initiatives, and compliance reporting.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the use of plant resources to ensure safety, quality, and production goals set by the General Manager are met or exceeded
  • Oversee production and shipping operations of a galvanizing facility
  • Receive intensive training in industrial troubleshooting, accounting, financial forecasting, human resources, and galvanizing sales and services
  • Assist in identifying operations’ best practices, perform lean audits and kaizen events, and travel to assist/learn from high-level project management experiences
  • Facilitate positive customer relations through quality coated products and on-time delivery
  • Utilize production and analytical reports to gauge plant performance and inform decisions
  • Review and control operating expenses for raw materials, operating supplies, and equipment
  • Maintain manpower requirements through staffing, training, and development of production personnel, supervisors, and other technical staff
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety requirements per corporate policy and government regulation

The Role
  • Plan and develop plant personnel to maximize efficiency and resource utilization
  • Select, train, develop and motivate an effective staff to ensure safety, production, quality, and service objectives are met
  • Travel to other Coatings sites to identify best practices, perform lean audits, and assist with startup or satellite operations
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of relevant experience, or an Associate’s degree with 8+ years, or 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Ability to recognize and solve practical problems
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Proven track record in lean manufacturing principles including standard work, continuous improvement, problem resolution and results delivery
  • Ability to travel approximately 10-15%
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds (frequent up to 10 pounds)
  • Ability to wear required PPE and work in varied environmental conditions
  • Passion and integrity with drive to excel
  • Must be bilingual (English and Spanish)
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
  • Master’s in Business Administration, Industrial Management, Manufacturing, Operations, Engineering, or Chemistry
  • 5-7 years of supervisory or management experience in an industrial environment
  • Experience in galvanizing or coatings preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of OSHA and environmental regulations and labor standards
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and manuals
  • Strong leadership and professional communication skills
  • Experience in Below Grade Coating applications and blasting processes
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt Certification

Working Environment And Physical Efforts

Work is in a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, cold, heat, noise, and dust. The Operations Manager will work in both office and shop settings. The role is fast-paced and demanding, with 10-15% travel required. Occasional lifting up to 15 pounds may be necessary. Reasonable ergonomic practices should be followed.
