Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a 2nd Shift CNC Machinist – Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) to join our operations team. This position is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. The schedule for this role is 4:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m., supporting second shift production.
This role will primarily operate a cell of two (2) large Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs) utilizing Fanuc Controls and Solid
CAM software to produce close-tolerance components.
- Set up and operate a cell of two large Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs) for precision machining operations.
- Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or work pieces as guides for machining.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
- Calculate and set machining factors including speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut; enter or edit commands using Fanuc controls and Solid
CAM software. - Read and interpret G-codes and M-codes for program setup and troubleshooting.
- Start and monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining; adjust controls or programs as required.
- Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications using appropriate measuring instruments.
- Perform trial runs to confirm accuracy of machine settings and programmed control data.
- Perform deburring of machined parts.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned by supervision.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience operating Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs) or large slant bed lathes.
- Demonstrated experience setting up and machining close-tolerance parts on large floor chucks ranging from 60” to 90”.
- Proficiency using Fanuc Controls and Solid
CAM software. - Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Thorough understanding of G-codes and M-codes.
- Strong mathematical skills and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently and maintain quality standards in a production environment.
- Ability to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Willingness to work second shift hours (4:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.) and overtime as required.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods during the shift.
- Ability to lift and move materials of moderate weight with or without assistance.
- Ability to safely operate large machining equipment and material handling devices.
- Manual dexterity required for measuring, setup, and machine adjustments.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing/shop environment with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and metal shavings.
