Job Description

Powell is a manufacturer of switch gear and other electrical equipment. We are currently hiring a MIG Welder at our Southeast Houston manufacturing facility.

Schedule:

Monday-Thursday 2:15pm-12:45am; OT as needed.

Purpose of Position

A Fitter/Welder will produce sheet metal weldments, either individually or as part of a small team. Weldments must match dimensional specifications from mechanical engineering drawings, meet tolerance requirements, and meet any cosmetic or appearance specifications. This may involve grinding, buffing, and applying finishes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ability to MIG weld mild steel
  • Ability to MIG weld stainless steel
  • Basic fitting skills
  • Adjust machine settings per department manual
  • Remove material using grinding
  • Read drawings and inspect parts for basic dimensions
  • Perform basic layout, positioning, and alignment
  • Inspect parts against complex engineered drawings
  • Spray transfer MIG welding
  • Examine weld bead attributes
  • Identify types of copper, stainless grades, etc.
  • Knowledge of flux core and shielded wire
  • Capabilities to cope and fit
Relationships
  • Reporting to department Supervisor
  • Internal interactions:
    Machine Operators, Welders, Painters, Material Handlers, Lead persons, Supervisors
Job Requirements Responsibilities, Skills, Experience, and Requirements
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience
  • Basic command of the English language, written and verbal
  • Execute hot work outside of department
  • Finish grind and surface finishing per departmental requirements
  • Repair improper welds
  • Use fixtures in area of responsibility
  • Tack weld, stud weld, and fine tune voltage
  • Square parts, torch cut, arc metal gouge
  • Basic product knowledge of how work ties into larger picture
  • Knowledge of AWS charts/steel tables and welding symbols
  • Use basic tools: tape measure, squares, clamps, fillet gauge, angle finder
  • Convert decimals to fractions and use conversion charts
  • Effective communication with co‑workers and teamwork
  • Adhere to Lock Out Tag Out procedures and all safety rules
  • Follow company operating procedures, safety rules, and ISO requirements
Working Environment

All work is performed in a shop environment with constant exposure to shop elements. Powell promotes safe working conditions for all employees, provides special equipment where necessary, and enforces safety rules and ISO requirements. Personal Protective Equipment is required during job operation.
