Position Overview

The Industrial Paint Lead is a production position responsible for assisting the area supervisor in maintaining all functions affecting shop safety, quality, production, budget, and schedule related to industrial painting operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or assist the supervisor in paint activities in accordance with facility compliance and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare surface and apply protective coatings to above‑ground piping, steel structures, and related appurtenances.
  • Operate and maintain blasting, spraying, and other coating equipment.
  • Prepare, match colors, and mix primers, paints, and coatings to proper consistency and viscosity using thinners, solvents, additives, and agitators as required.
  • Select blade pressures, nozzles, temperature, humidity, and cure times for optimal application.
  • Mask, plug, or block areas not to be coated and apply wet primers, paints, and coatings uniformly to avoid overspray and ensure even coverage.
  • Check finished items visually and mechanically for pinholes, runs, bare spots, and proper coverage; refinish and touch up as necessary.
  • Coordinate the movement of finished goods to inspection or shipping areas and maintain spray application equipment, booths, filters, protective clothing, and other equipment.
  • Ensure painting supplies are stocked and coordinate with the blast area for parts availability.
  • Assist or direct others in performing work as needed.
Job Skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial paint principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Ability to use scaffolding, rigging, access and containment systems, and safety equipment.
  • Strong technical background to interpret charts, graphs, and technical paint specification data.
  • Strong mechanical background for root‑cause analysis and troubleshooting of paint equipment.
  • Familiarity with industrial coatings application processes, 2‑part mixing, HVLP equipment, and material handling.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and complete accurate paperwork.
Education & Training
  • High school diploma plus 3–5 years of industrial painting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a lead position overseeing a paint crew.
  • SSPC Coating Application Specialist (CAS).
  • SSPC Applicator Training.
  • SSPC Abrasive Blasting Program (C7).
  • SSPC Basics of Steel Surface Preparation.
  • SSPC Airless Spray Basics (C12).
  • SSPC Plural Component Application for Polyureas & High Solid Coatings.
  • Safety training in confined space, fall protection, respiratory protection, and OSHA.
Minimum Requirements
  • 3–5 years of industrial painting experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents written in English.
  • Surface preparation experience (abrasive blasting, hand/power tool).
  • Application of pumps, airless, conventional spray, brush/roller, epoxies, urethanes, and zincs.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
  • Some heavy lifting and moving of equipment required; items up to 70 lbs.
  • Regular exposure to dust, odors, oil, fumes, and noise.
  • Ability to stand up to 11 hours a day (with lunch break), up to 6 days a week, in a non‑temperature‑controlled environment.
  • Steel‑toe boots required; safety glasses required during tasks.
  • Ability to exert up to 30 lbs. of force occasionally or less frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
  • Requires use of fingers, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Visual acuity necessary for color, depth perception, and field of vision for data and computer operations.
