Receiving Material Handler / Crane Operator

Position Summary

The Receiving Material Handler is responsible for safely unloading inbound steel shipments, inspecting incoming material, maintaining accurate inventory records, and staging material for production. This role works closely with production, quality, shipping, and warehouse personnel to ensure materials are received accurately and efficiently while maintaining a safe work environment.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Safely unload inbound steel coils, plate, and other materials using overhead cranes and other material handling equipment.
  • Perform daily inspections of cranes, lifting devices, and equipment before use, documenting and reporting any maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Verify incoming shipments against purchase orders, packing slips, bills of lading, and receiving documentation.
  • Inspect incoming material for damage, quantity discrepancies, and quality concerns, reporting issues to Quality and Operations.
  • Accurately receive materials into inventory and update storage locations using company systems.
  • Stage received materials in designated storage areas for production or warehouse storage.
  • Coordinate with production supervisors to ensure material availability for scheduled work orders.
  • Weigh materials as required and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Empty scrap hoppers and record scrap weights.
  • Assist shipping operations and machine operators during periods of high production or as business needs require.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe receiving area.
  • Identify opportunities to improve receiving processes, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of experience in receiving, warehousing, manufacturing, steel processing, or a related industrial environment.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes is preferred.
  • Forklift experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of safe rigging and material handling practices.
  • Ability to safely move large, heavy, and irregularly shaped steel products.
  • Experience inspecting inbound freight and identifying damaged or non-conforming material.
  • Basic computer skills and experience maintaining inventory records.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including material weights and quantities.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety, quality, and inventory accuracy.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently on a routine basis and handle materials safely as part of daily job duties.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and maintain safe body positioning while performing tasks and moving through the work area, including walking on concrete floors and uneven surfaces.
  • Frequent squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting, requiring full-body mobility, balance, and upper- and lower-body strength to perform work safely.
  • Manual agility to operate tools safely and effectively, with regular use of arms, shoulders, and back for lifting, reaching, and positioning tasks.
  • Ability to work safely in a warehouse environment with exposure to noise, dust, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
