Machinist III

Responsibilities

• Plan, layout, machine, and assemble parts and tools to precision tolerances using mechanical or specialty apparatus.
• Set and operate a variety of machining equipment, including engine and bench lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, job borers, grinders, hones, gear cutters, and drill presses, to fully utilize all functions of the machines.
• Plan and determine the sequence of machining operations, number of cuts, tools, and methods of holding and aligning work to achieve required finishes and tolerances.
• Make complete layouts on parts involving compound angles and exacting mating part work, checking for sufficient stock and using drawings as reference during machining.
• Set up machines to perform operations independently within their capacity.
• Select, mount, and align specialized machine attachments and standard or improvised tooling.
• Determine, set, and adjust machine speeds, feeds, and depth of cut.
• Select, mount, and fasten cutting tools for specified finish and best performance based on material.
• Check machine set‑up and parts run for conformance to blueprint specifications.
• Grind own tool bits and drills.
• Work from detailed drawings, templates, sketches, assembly blueprints, or oral instructions.
• Offer technical direction to customers on pre‑fabrication reviews, modifications, or repairs.
• Operate machines to perform operations such as chasing single and multiple external tapers; turning, boring, reaming, facing, slotting, etc., for any machine fit; machining parts involving compound angles or coordinated concave or convex surfaces to exacting tolerances.
• Program and operate in at least one CNC language.
• Train less experienced machinists and conduct general inspection of work.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Organize and properly store inventory, materials, and safety equipment.
• Use lift equipment as required.
• Perform related duties as required.

• High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 12 years of machinist experience.
• Familiarity with at least one CNC programming language.
• Proficient with standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

• Proficiency in programming CNC Mills and Lathes with CAD/CAM, including ProE, GibbsCAM, or conversational CNC multi‑axis programming.
• Experience on HAAS Machining Centers, Hurco Machining Centers, Servo, and Mazak Machining Centers.
• Experience with horizontal multi‑axis or vertical machines with 4th‑axis rotation, including setup and tooling knowledge.
• Overhead crane experience.
• Handling of NASA flight hardware.
