Band Saw Operator – 1st & 2nd Shift (Temp‑to‑Hire)
Location:
Houston, TX 77021 (must live within 10–15 miles of the site). Pay: $18–$19 per hour, based on experience.
Shifts:
1st Shift – 6:00AM to 2:30PM, 2nd Shift – 2:30PM to 10:30PM, Monday–Friday.
We are seeking an experienced Band Saw Operator to join a large steel manufacturing and distribution operation in Houston. The role involves accurately cutting metal materials using horizontal band saws and/or cold saws while maintaining safety, quality, and production standards in a heavy industrial, open‑air environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate horizontal band saws and/or cold saws to cut metal materials to specified lengths.
- Set up saws, including selecting and adjusting feeds and speeds based on material grade and cut requirements.
- Accurately read and interpret tape measurements, work orders, cut lists, and production documentation.
- Identify and work with various metal material grades.
- Verify measurements and finished cut lengths for accuracy.
- Perform basic equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns.
- Safely move and stage materials for processing.
- Work around large steel products including beams, tubing, pipe, rebar, and structural materials.
- Work safely around overhead cranes, forklifts, moving industrial equipment, and truck traffic.
- Maintain awareness of pinch points, moving machinery, suspended loads, and loading operations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, PPE requirements, and company policies.
- Collaborate with warehouse and production personnel to meet daily production goals.
This position is located in a large open‑air, non‑climate‑controlled steel manufacturing and distribution facility. The environment is loud, active, fast‑paced, and physically demanding. Employees must remain alert and maintain constant awareness of their surroundings due to potential hazards such as structural steel beams, pipe, tubing, rebar, horizontal band saws, overhead cranes, industrial forklifts, semi‑trucks, heavy manufacturing equipment, and large quantities of moving metal materials.
Required Qualifications- Proven experience operating horizontal band saws and/or cold saws.
- Strong understanding of feeds and speeds for cutting applications.
- Experience cutting metal materials.
- Ability to accurately read tape measures and measurements.
- Experience reading work orders, cut lists, and production documentation.
- Prior experience in a warehouse, manufacturing, fabrication, metal service center, or industrial environment.
- Ability to work consistently on assigned shift.
- Ability to safely work around heavy materials and industrial equipment.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work in an open‑air, non‑climate‑controlled manufacturing environment.
- Experience in a metal service center or metals distribution operation.
- Experience cutting steel, aluminum, tubing, pipe, or structural materials.
- Experience with overhead cranes and material handling equipment.
- Forklift experience.
- Familiarity with production schedules and material handling processes.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Overtime may be available based on workload (not guaranteed). Occasional weekend work may be required when business needs arise.
Physical Requirements- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
- Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and work in a warehouse/manufacturing environment.
- Ability to safely handle materials throughout the shift.
- Manual dexterity to operate machinery safely and accurately.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding industrial environment.
