Machine Operator, CNC Machinist, Production QC/QA, Manufacturing & Industrial Operations
Position Summary
The Manual Machinist II is responsible for independently setting up, operating, inspecting, and troubleshooting conventional machining operations using manual lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, saws, and related equipment. This role requires the ability to interpret complex prints, apply common GD&T requirements, determine machining methods, select appropriate tooling, and perform in-process inspection to ensure parts meet quality and production standards.
A Manual Machinist II is a fully independent machinist for standard and moderately complex machining work. This role is expected to maintain productivity and quality, resolve common machining issues, support multiple machining operations where applicable, and assist less experienced machinists as needed.
Key Responsibilities Machine Setup, Operation, and Productivity- Independently set up and operate manual machining equipment for standard and moderately complex work using prints, work instructions, fixtures, tooling, and manufacturing requirements.
- Perform machine setups, work holding installation, tooling selection, machine alignment, and preparation required for assigned jobs.
- Determine appropriate machining methods, machining sequences, cutting tools, speeds, and feeds to efficiently produce quality parts.
- Perform turning, milling, drilling, tapping, boring, grinding, reaming, threading, and related machining operations as required.
- Support quality and efficiency by managing setup times, production flow, and multiple assignments where applicable.
- Monitor tooling, machine conditions, and part quality throughout production and respond appropriately to prevent scrap, rework, or downtime.
- Produce prototype, repair, low-volume production, and custom-machined components as assigned.
- Maintain equipment, tooling, and work areas in accordance with company standards.
- Read and interpret complex prints, specifications, dimensions, tolerances, notes, and work instructions.
- Understand and apply common GD&T controls and datum requirements during setup, machining, and inspection.
- Perform full in-process inspection using calipers, micrometers, indicators, gauges, height gauges, and other required measuring instruments.
- Verify that parts meet dimensional, visual, and customer requirements before continuing production or releasing work to the next operation.
- Identify nonconforming or questionable parts and follow procedures for escalation, containment, documentation, and corrective action support.
- Maintain accurate production and inspection records in accordance with company procedures.
- Resolve common machining issues related to tooling, surface finish, dimensional variation, machine alignment, work holding, and material conditions.
- Select appropriate tooling independently for standard work and recommend tooling changes when needed.
- Understand the machining behavior of common and difficult-to-machine materials and make appropriate adjustments within established guidelines.
- Verify machine setups, work holding methods, and tooling arrangements are properly secured, aligned, and suitable for the operation.
- Communicate recurring production, quality, tooling, or equipment concerns to supervisors, leads, engineering, or quality personnel as appropriate.
- Assist Manual Machinist I employees and production personnel with setup questions, inspection requirements, troubleshooting, and process understanding as needed.
- Suggest improvements to machining methods, tooling, inspection techniques, safety, quality, and production efficiency.
- Support cross-functional problem resolution with supervisors, leads, quality, engineering, production, and maintenance personnel.
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and model safe work practices for less experienced employees.
- Support training and knowledge sharing to improve department capability and consistency.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school, vocational machining training, apprenticeship coursework, or equivalent manufacturing training preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of manual machining experience.
- Experience performing independent machine setups on manual lathes, mills, grinders, and related equipment.
- Experience reading complex prints and applying common GD&T requirements.
- Experience performing in-process inspection using standard measuring tools.
- Experience producing precision-machined components to close tolerances.
- Ability to independently set up and operate manual machining equipment for standard and moderately complex work.
- Ability to read complex prints, specifications, dimensions, and tolerances.
