CNC Mill or Lathe Machinist

This role is responsible for setting up and operating CNC equipment to machine new and repair parts to precise print specifications. You will work primarily on medium-sized components for large control flow valves, using advanced CNC mills or lathes and related equipment to achieve tight tolerances and high-quality finishes.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC vertical mills to machine new and repair parts according to print specifications.
  • Run either a CNC vertical mill with Mazatrol controls or a CNC Johnford vertical mill with Fanuc controls, as assigned.
  • Operate a Toshiba BP 150 horizontal boring mill with Tosnuc controls when required, if experienced on this equipment.
  • Machine medium-sized, square or rectangular parts for large control flow valves, focusing on top milling, facing, and drilling operations.
  • Handle parts ranging from approximately 15–25 inches outer dimension and 30–1,000 pounds in weight, using appropriate fixturing and handling methods.
  • Perform full machine setups, including tooling, work holding, and program loading, to ensure accurate and efficient production.
  • Make program edits as needed using G and M codes to optimize machining performance and maintain part quality.
  • Maintain dimensional accuracy by machining to tolerances of approximately ±0.001 inch.
  • Cross-train to run a standard CNC lathe with Fanuc controls and operate it as needed to support production.
  • Inspect parts during and after machining to verify conformance to specifications and make adjustments as required.
  • Monitor machine performance, troubleshoot issues, and communicate any mechanical or quality concerns promptly.
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area within the shop.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience as a CNC mill machinist.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience running a vertical mill.
  • Proven ability to perform complete CNC setups, including tooling and work holding, on milling machines.
  • Experience making program edits and adjustments at the machine control.
  • Demonstrated ability to machine to tight tolerances of approximately ±0.001 inch.
  • Experience working with Fanuc or Mazatrol controls on CNC equipment.
  • Proficiency with G and M codes and their application to CNC milling operations.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC milling machines and vertical machining centers.
  • Experience operating or familiarity with CNC lathes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience running Johnford, HNK, or SNK vertical mills is a strong plus.
  • Prior experience operating a Toshiba BP 150 horizontal boring mill with Tosnuc controls is beneficial.
  • Previous exposure to machining medium-sized, heavy components such as valve or industrial equipment parts.
  • Comfort working with large work pieces and using appropriate lifting and handling equipment.
  • Willingness to cross-train on additional machines and expand technical capabilities over time.

Why Work Here?

You will join a busy operation with consistent workload and the opportunity to work substantial overtime for those who want additional hours. The environment encourages continuous learning, offering the chance to train on a variety of machines and broaden your machining skill set. You will work in a clean, climate-controlled shop that supports long-term engagement and the potential to move from contract to a more extended arrangement based on performance and workload.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, air-conditioned shop environment with modern CNC equipment, including vertical mills with Mazatrol and Fanuc controls and a Toshiba BP 150 horizontal boring mill with Tosnuc controls. This is an open-ended contract position expected to run through the end of the year and likely well into the next year, with the possibility of converting to a longer-term opportunity for the right person.

The schedule is primarily night shift, typically 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, with some Sundays as needed. When business is busy, you should be comfortable working approximately 13 days on and 1 day off, and working 60 or more hours per week.
