Shift: 6:00 pm - 5:30 am (Monday-Saturday as required) Position Summary

North Shore Steel is seeking a motivated and dependable Material Handler – Crane Operator to join our fabrication team in Houston. This position plays a critical role in supporting Machining Operators by assisting with material handling, production preparation, and workflow coordination. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, thrives in a manufacturing environment, and has a strong desire to learn and develop new skills.

General Description

This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and serves as a key support role within the department. The Crane Operator assists Machine Operators with material preparation, machine setup activities, part handling, quality checks, and production support to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate manufacturing operations.

Primary Duties
  • Perform daily inspection of pendulum control unit, wire ropes and other accessory equipment.
  • Immediately report all deficiencies found and unusual noises and/or difficulties in operation of the equipment.
  • Identify material to be placed into production, verifying correct tag and heat numbers. Determine weight of material and utilize crane with the appropriate capacity.
  • Assist and/or direct riggers in properly securing material on crane before moving material.
  • Load, unload, stage, and move raw materials and finished products safely throughout the work area.
  • Always be ware of activity/co-workers in the area to insure the safety of all. Advise all co-workers in the area before movement of material on overhead crane.
  • Assist with stock checks and physical counts as directed.
  • Assist in training co-workers as requested.

    Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Assist with routine equipment cleaning and basic preventive maintenance activities.
  • Follow all company policy procedures and be vigilant in watching for potential risks in the area and notify management of deficiencies identified.
  • Attend all training and safety meetings as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Previous manufacturing, fabrication, warehouse, construction, or industrial experience preferred.
  • Overhead crane, forklift, or material handling equipment experience is a plus.
