Job DescriptionThe Communications Specialist reports directly to the Director of Communications and plays a key role in supporting both internal and external communications. This position involves creating a wide range of district content, including web blog stories, newsletters, news releases, bond updates, parent communiqués, and media responses. Additionally, the Communications Specialist will assist with event planning and contribute to the production of executive and district‑level communications, such as publications, speeches, presentations and talking points for the superintendent.

QualificationsRequired:
- Portfolio of work (writing samples)
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, or related field from an accredited institution
- Three years of demonstrated success in writing and editing general organizational communications, including strategic communiqués for executives
Preferred:
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university
- Experience in school district communications, media relations, and event planning
- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated skills in writing and editing
- Strong copy‑editing and proofreading skills
- Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Stylebook
- Ability to use desktop publishing hardware and software
- Ability to work as a team member
- Work closely with the Director of Communications in producing district and school communications
- Produce a wide range of district content, including web blog stories, newsletters, news releases, bond updates, parent communiqués, and media responses
- Assist with training district and campus personnel in communications best practices
- Assist with producing district publications
- Provide editing support to the communications team
- Work as a member of the communications team to maintain the district’s brand
- Participate in professional growth opportunities
- Perform other duties and accept additional responsibilities as assigned
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, prolonged use of computer, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 15 lbs. This position will also require prolonged and irregular hours and the ability to work independently. Mental demands include the ability to solve problems, interpret data, apply current research and theory, communicate effectively orally and in writing, maintain emotional control under stress, and work with frequent interruptions.
