Position: Registered Nurse II  3 Medical

Overview

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital. FT position on 3 Medical for an experienced RN, 7p to 7a.

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II communicates and collaborates with physicians and interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes.

The position demonstrates clinical competence in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, and acts as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. This role assumes leadership with progressive responsibility including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Qualifications

Education
Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.

Experience
Twelve months RN experience in a healthcare environment.

Licenses and Certifications

Required:

RN – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency).
BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.

Preferred:
Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.

  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially activities impacting safety.

  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional team and patients/families.
  • Uses clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient time management and ongoing professional contribution as defined in the Clinical Career Path program.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook.

  • Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
  • Contributes to teamwork by monitoring unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding to requests for help. Fosters healthy work relationships and seeks/gives guidance to improve patient outcomes.
  • Implements staff education for patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors staff and students. May include preceptorship. Uses peer-to-peer accountability to improve department metrics.
Service Essential Functions
  • Follows patient- and family-centered care standards; conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records.
  • Develops, updates and communicates plan of care, including discharge planning, with patient, family and interprofessional team. Prioritizes care based on patient needs, abilities and preferences; advocates for patients/families to address clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Provides patient teaching based on learning needs and evaluates understanding; adapts teaching methods as needed.
  • Supports improvement of department score for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.
