Overview

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist West Hospital. The Registered Nurse (RN) II is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, and functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records.

The RN II communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence in care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and protect patient rights. The position may assume leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and potentially contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Qualifications
  • Education:
    Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
  • Experience:
    Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Licenses and Certifications (Required): RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing/PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency; BLS (Basic Life Support) or Instructor (AHA).
  • Licenses and Certifications (Preferred):
    Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification; ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates skills and competencies to safely perform the assigned job, as defined in orientation and departmental competency checklists.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions and safety-critical activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers with a customer service focus.
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients and families.
  • Uses clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time management and professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.

  • Uses therapeutic communication, active listening and teaching to establish relationships with patients, families and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
  • Contributes to teamwork by awareness of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding to requests; collaborates to foster healthy work relationships; seeks and offers guidance to improve patient outcomes.
  • Implements staff education relevant to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors staff and students, including possible preceptorship; promotes peer accountability to improve department scores.
Service Essential Functions
  • Follows patient- and family-centered care standards; conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records.
  • Develops, updates and communicates the plan of care, including discharge planning, with input from patient, family and the interprofessional team; prioritizes care based on patient needs and advocates for patients and families.
  • Provides patient teaching aligned to learning needs and resources; assesses comprehension and adapts teaching as needed.
  • Supports improvements in department patient satisfaction through accountability to service standards.
