This position has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their hospital experience. The incumbent is directly responsible to the Nurse Director and CNO and is responsible for the continual operation of the Emergency Room. The incumbent will have strong experience in the Emergency Department (ED) & managerial experience.
This position demonstrates critical thinking skills and creativity and has the knowledge to manage resources to achieve quality performance, positive employee relations and compliance with hospital guidelines. The incumbent will assign all patient care activities assuring that staff are there to care for assigned patients, support team members, and ensure quality and service excellence to our patients. The ER Nurse Manager is skilled in coaching, motivating, mentoring, and leading a professional and technical team in the delivery of services for our patient population.
The Nurse Manager ER will also be directly involved in the unit-based practice council, quality improvement activities, as well as unit budget management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- The RN Manager of the ER will oversee the seamless operation of critical patient care services.
- Strategic planning, staff supervision, and resource management to ensure the delivery of high-quality emergency medical services.
- Focus on maintaining compliance, fostering a collaborative team environment, and optimizing patient outcomes.
- Will supervise both clinical and administrative functions within the ER.
- Will be responsible for department staffing, engaging in recruitment activities, assessing, and appraising staff performance, creating training programs, enforcing departmental policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, overseeing departmental budgets, and actively participating in several hospital committees.
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels for all acute care nursing units.
- Serve as clinical resource person in delivery and supervision of direct and indirect care processes.
- Provide competent leadership and direction for all hospital Codes and emergency management.
- Act as agent for department and hospital executives when they are not present and report concerns and events to the designated administrator on call.
- Demonstrates competence in the clinical skills required for patient care while applying nursing knowledge and skills to clinical situations and assumes ownership for achieving patient outcomes.
- Demonstrates critical thinking and priority setting in complex patient care situations.
- Provides direct patient care by evaluating the medical complaint or current symptoms and report to physician.
- Demonstrates leadership and management skills with knowledge and application of advanced professional nursing practice, CQI process-Continuous Quality Improvement, nursing care delivery models, health care delivery systems.
- Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, procedures, diagnostic testing, and treatments.
- Per physician’s orders performs IV initiation/infusion/therapy, blood draws, cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, applies oxygen, administers nebulized treatment, cleans and bandages wounds, applies splints, and provides basic bedside care.
- Supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the hospital.
- ER nursing: 3+ years (Required)
- Experience in the Emergency Department (ED) & managerial experience required.
- Recent 5+ years RN and 3+ years of ER Leadership (Charge Nurse, Supervisor) experience.
- BSN Required
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Current Texas RN License
- Ability to triage timely and accurately in all emergency situations.
- BLS, CPR, ACLS, PALS required at time of hire
- BSN Required
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Current Texas RN License
- BLS, CPR, ACLS, PALS required. Current BLS at time of hire
- Emergency Nurse Certification (CEN), granted by the Emergency Nurses Association, preferred.
- Ability to triage timely and accurately in all emergency situations.
- Ability to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families.
- Be able to carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks.
- Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and in accordance with policy and procedure.

- Identify and act on predictable needs of the patient.
- Ability to meet the health care needs of patient by assessing and assisting the patient to meet expressed needs.
