Primary Purpose

The Districtwide School Nurse (RN) for Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success (RYSS) is responsible for implementing and coordinating a comprehensive school health services program that supports student wellness, safety, and academic success across assigned campuses. The nurse provides professional nursing services to students, promotes preventive health practices, supports compliance with state and federal health requirements, and collaborates with families, staff, and community partners to meet the diverse health needs of RYSS students.

Qualifications

Education / Certification

* Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program

* Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)

* Current CPR/AED certification (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers)

Special Knowledge / Skills

* Knowledge of student health appraisal and identification of health conditions affecting learning

* Knowledge of school health laws, regulations, and best practices

* Ability to implement district policies, procedures, and health protocols

* Knowledge of basic first aid, emergency response, and chronic condition management

* Proficient keyboarding, data entry, and confidential record-keeping skills

* Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence

* Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

* Ability to work effectively with students, families, campus staff, and external healthcare providers

* Commitment to equity, student advocacy, and the mission of Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success

Experience

* 3 years of professional nursing experience (school health experience preferred)

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Nursing Services

* Provide direct nursing care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established district and campus health protocols.

* Assess student health concerns; communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding individual student needs; ensure appropriate referrals, follow-up, and continuity of care.

* Serve as a liaison between school personnel, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies.

* Notify parents/guardians of student illness or injury and secure emergency medical care when necessary.

* Develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic conditions or medical complexity to ensure safe participation in school activities.

* Advocate for student health, safety, and access to services that support academic success.

* Ensure medications are administered according to district policy, physician orders, and state regulations.

* Establish, coordinate, and implement mandatory screening programs in compliance with state requirements (e.g., vision, hearing, spinal, acanthosis nigricans).

* Conduct home visits, when appropriate, to address student health concerns and reduce barriers to attendance and learning.

Instruction and Health Promotion

* Support the development and implementation of campus health education initiatives.

* Provide health education and training to students, staff, and families, including contributing to campus and district communications on health-related topics.

* Educate faculty and staff on health conditions, emergency procedures, and preventive practices as needed.

Consultation and Collaboration

* Collaborate closely with campus principals, counselors, special education staff, and teachers to promote a healthy and safe learning environment.

* Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings for students with identified health needs and contribute to the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and IHPs.

* Advise campus administration during medical emergencies or crisis situations.

* Participate in assessment, reporting, and response related to suspected child abuse or neglect, in accordance with mandatory reporting laws.

Administration

* Work collaboratively with the Health Services Coordinator to evaluate and continuously improve campus and district health programs.

* Develop and recommend campus and district procedures that promote student and staff wellness.

* Supervise, train, and evaluate Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and other designated staff to whom nursing tasks have been delegated.
