In the Houston Methodist System Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) PRN position, you will deliver professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, educate patients, and maintain accurate medical records. You will collaborate with physicians and interprofessional teams to facilitate high‑quality care and serve as an advocate for patients and their families.

QUALIFICATIONS- Graduate of a nursing education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s)
- Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Compact Licensure (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA)
- NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI)
- Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers, with a customer service focus
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills to prioritize multiple tasks
- Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients
- Use of critical thinking and clinical judgment for autonomous practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Proficient time‑management skills
- Maintenance of professional contributions per the Clinical Career Path program guide
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook
- Use therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the health‑care team
- Contribute to teamwork by being aware of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests
- Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coach and mentor other staff and students (includes preceptorship)
- Follow patient‑ and family‑centered care standards as outlined in Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice
- Conduct assessments, assist with exams and treatment, and maintain medical records
- Develop, update, and communicate patients’ plans of care, including discharge, in partnership with the patient, family, and interprofessional team
- Advocate on behalf of patients/families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, using appropriate resources
- Provide patient teaching based on learning needs; use appropriate resources and adapt teaching methods accordingly
- Follow the standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined in Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice
- Follow regulatory requirements and professional practice standards; identify improvement areas with evidence‑based research to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes
- Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care with the interprofessional team based on patient condition, supporting with accurate documentation
- Improve quality and safety scores through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration with the interprofessional team
- Display self‑motivation to manage time effectively, document care timely, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks
- Contribute toward meeting department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency
- Identify and present areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence‑based practice literature
- Champion new care pathways or service‑line implementation to improve community service; research, present options to shared governance and leadership
