Position: Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or Physician Assistant) - Infectious Diseases
The Infectious Diseases department provides expert clinical consultations to prevent, diagnose, and treat infections in both adult and pediatric cancer patients. Our mission is to provide specialized expertise in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infections in cancer patients through high quality clinical consultation, infection control and research programs.

The ideal Advanced Practice Provider will be a compassionate, detail-oriented advanced practice provider who thrives in a collaborative, academic medical environment and is committed to delivering high-quality infectious disease care to adult and pediatric oncology patients. This individual demonstrates strong clinical judgment and growing independence in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex infections across the cancer care continuum, while working under the supervision of an attending physician and in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.

The candidate is skilled in obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing physical examinations, interpreting diagnostic and radiographic studies, developing and managing treatment plans, and performing procedures and prescribing therapies as authorized.

They excel as part of an interdisciplinary team, effectively communicate with patients and families, and serve as a clinical resource through education and triage. In addition, the ideal candidate supports administrative and documentation processes, maintains accurate medical records, assists with referrals and follow-up care, and demonstrates interest in clinical research, protocol development, and applying evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes in oncology infectious disease care.

The shift will be 4-10/hour shifts working Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm plus one weekend requirement Saturday & Sunday in-person shift every five weeks.

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the performance of increasingly independent and complex tasks that are routine and standardized. It provides direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care under Physician supervision and impacts the quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the disease process.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Patient Care - Direct

As an integral part of an interdisciplinary team, he or she provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process.

Acts under the authority and supervision of the attending physician and in accordance with regulations, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways.

Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic tests and radiographic results, formulates and manages patient treatment plans and outcomes.

Performs procedures, prescribes treatment, and signs prescriptions in accordance with institution and state requirements.

Screens physician calls to educate patient/family on care and resources.

Makes rounds with interdisciplinary team.

Collaborates in research projects, formulates protocols, and applies research to practice.

Administrative

Process correspondence with patients, physicians, third-party carriers, and other entities as delegated by the supervising physician.

Assist supervising physician with routine chart follow-ups and order appropriate referrals, laboratory, radiological, or supportive care.

Assist with and maintain patient records in compliance with UTMDACC guidelines.

EDUCATION

* Required:

Master's Degree Nursing. or

Doctorate Nursing Practice.

Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.

Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
