At Houston Methodist, the Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (NP) AC (ACLS) position is responsible for functioning as a licensed registered nurse and care provider to deliver all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation while maintaining and promoting the health of the patient. This role may work in both inpatient and outpatient settings and follows the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas as part of a treatment team.
The NP AC (ACLS) models compassionate communication with patients, physicians, and the interprofessional healthcare team, educates patients about preventive care and prescribed treatments, may conduct physicals, order tests, serve as a patient’s healthcare provider, and prescribe medications as appropriate. The position affects direct patient care in accordance with the Houston Methodist Professional Practice Model, Nursing Practice, and Professional Performance policies and procedures.

EDUCATION- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing and graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioners program
- Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing, PSV Compact Licensure (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
- APRN Acute Care state license
- Magnet ANCC‑recognized Acute‑Care practitioner certification
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- AP – Prescriptive Authority – Texas Board of Nursing, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, PSV
- DEA – Narcotics License within 6 months
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a customer‑service‑focused manner
- Highly developed assessment, clinical, documentation, leadership, and analytical skills
- Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team to collaborate on care plans
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills, capable of prioritizing multiple tasks
- Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional team, and patients and their families
- Proficient time‑management skills
- Applies critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Provides leadership as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate. Identifies staff development opportunities and coaches staff to meet identified goals.
- Communicates organizational information and aspects of administrative and clinical practice in a respectful and positive manner, advocates for balanced workload, and promotes teamwork.
- Collaborates with the interprofessional healthcare team to manage/coordinate patient care, advocates on behalf of patients and families to resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
- Fosters healthy relationships in the work environment, serves as a role model, coaches staff in effective communication, and serves as preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students and medical residents as applicable.
- Coordinates timely patient care under physician supervision for defined patient populations, prioritizing care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences.
