Position Summary

Provides professional nursing service by administering anesthesia to surgical patients. Prepares and administers anesthetic to patients to reversibly depress bodily functions, or otherwise desensitize a patient to permit the performance of medical or surgical procedures.

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Prepares and administers anesthetic agents to patients to desensitize them for medical or surgical procedures.
  • Performs pre‑anesthesia evaluation of the patient to assess physiological and psychological factors influencing anesthetic agent selection and management planning.
  • Monitors the patient in the operating room to maintain homeostasis and prevent unnecessary injuries.
  • Records anesthetic information on the chart to provide a permanent record for patient care, teaching, study, and medical‑legal purposes.
  • Provides clinical supervision or guidance for nurse anesthesia students, paramedical, and medical students, and responds to emergency situations.
  • Manages departmental Human Resources activities, including recruitment, selection, hiring, termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification and Skills
  • Skilled in administration of varied regional anesthesia techniques (spinal, epidurals, brachial plexus blocks).
  • Skilled in placement of arterial lines, CVP, and PA lines; competent in interpreting pressure monitoring and lab values; actively pursuing continuing education credits.
  • Familiar with interpreting EKG, arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring.
  • Skilled in respiratory management and blood gas analysis based on therapeutic knowledge.
  • APRN‑BC – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Board Certified required.
  • CRNA – Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, current American Association of Nurse Anesthetists certification (AANA), BLS required.
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and/or other specialty certification as required by the department.
  • The incumbent must meet 2 of 6 established requirements.
Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in Nurse Anesthesia required.

Experienced in a major medical center or trauma‑receiving hospital required.

Experience working with nurse anesthesia students, residents, and medical students required.

Experience as an R.N. in the critical and acute care areas required.

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
